WORSTEE... sometimes zero just isnt enough...

... does anyone ever come to Threadless... start voting & then just be overwhelmed by sadness... it seems like those brilliant designs seem to be spaced out in ever widening gaps... it takes a good couple of designs before you see something even barely passable... & there are sooooo sooooo many that just make you want to gouge the illustrator's eyes out...& seal them up in concrete... & steel & sink them to the bottom of the Atlantic... i've only been voting for a while now & i have a comprehensive list of cliches that keep resurfacing on here...now i'm not going to be the first to cast a stone by any means... i don't consider myself a good enough illustrator for mass market shirt designs... but there are some that clearly do... so if anyone feels that someone's design needs to be brutally consigned to the bowels of the internet... feel free to link to it here... alternatively feel free to ignore this as immature cynicism...

I dole out 0s like hell... I'm growing tired of so much lame subs and endless stupid fads... so now I vote 0 by default, and most of the time. That prints on April 1st were a painful blow, mostly utter crap!

Sure, there are a lot of subs that are not visually mind-blwoing. But don't think voting on designs is a black & white (5 & 0) issue. Surely there's got to be SOME artistic merit that deserves SOME recogntion to subpar designs.

I think people who click the 0's without batting an eye don't know how to take time out and really pay attention to details. They are probably also terrible in bed.

i think that's a great divide hear on threadless, as witnessed April 1.

many people think they're crap, and maybe there's truth in there cos they scored quite low as a whole.
however, there's just as many people it seems who feel that April 1st's prints were the best in a long time. original, different, stylized, whatever you want to categorize those specific shirts as, they were. and they're selling too.

so who's right?

... well i personally have no problem with stuff that has already been printed... i actually really liked the April 1st prints and the new April 7th stuff too... & there are definitely moments of genius amongst the subs... but my point is that quite often i find myself looking at something beyond sub par... sub par is still OK... it's the beyond sub par stuff i'm talking about...

...because the execution is sloppy, the placement careless, color choices generic, and the concept is a total gross-out. There was not one thing that I saw there that deserved any sort of praise.

I hate fads... if you ask me about that slogan (and some others of mine), yeah, I put there to see how it comes out, it is lame, and I wouldn't use it myself. And slogans are far worse than subs... 99% are stupid.

I'm not a B&W voter... but it's already hard to avoid a 0 (right now, 65% of the running designs got a 0 from me).
I love shirts with detailed design, creative, beautiful, funny and so on. What can I do if most designers are subbing zombies, pandas, cutesy things, food with faces, poorly drawn stuff...?

I think there are more and more good designs being submitted at threadless. I used to feel like there weren't that many, but I think it's getting better and better.

I reserve zeros for obvious plagiarism and that's pretty much it. I wish I had more time and better internet so that I could look through/score more designs.

mezo, if you scored every single submission that gets put up, i assure you, you'd give tons more zeros and have a much lower average score too.

i think that those who don't seem to give out many zeros, like in your case, may miss out on the subs that get dropped within the 24 hour limit.

ginette, you may very well be right, I don't spend hours on end voting. On the flip side, maybe people who DO spend time and vote on every single sub get mind-numbed and burnt out quicker?

I give higher scores to designs that people have obviously put a lot of work into. I tend to zero designs that look generic or stock. There are a lot of those kinds.

see... mezo ...i think you may have found the problem... ive been voting every day since i joined & it's possible im just worn out... working as a designer full time probably doesn't help... but i am hunting through the designs for the next shirt i want to buy... perhaps it's a case of the old adage...if you have nothing nice to say... & i used to teach design at a college here... so my built in critique mode is still in place... & i was kind to my students!

i have definitely been mind-numbed by the majority of submissions accepted here, but i feel like having seen all of the subs practically since i've signed up here i have a really good sense of scale when it comes to how i personally vote.

i only score the ones that i like... or really dislike. I can't be bothered as much as I used to. In my old account my average was scoring 0.7, but i did vote for a lot back then.

I'll give a 1 just for having the balls to put yourself out there for the public to judge, it not easy and if you look at some of the better designers it can be very intimidating.
