Hi guys.

I've been working on my newest design, and all is going well.
For the first time I'm working on a 600 dpi file, and it does help the quality a lot....

BUT...

Now I can't do anything anymore because my computer keeps telling me my scratch disk is full.
I don't have a clue about computers, so

What is going on, and how do I fix it?

I want to keep working. :-(

well, with Final Cut your scratch disk is where you render to, or where you capture footage to. basically, it's like a virtual drive inside your hard drive that's allocated a certain amount of space to help an application function and when that drive space is full, you can't add any more files to it, hence not being able to continue working

what program are you using?

i need an interpreter.

whenever my macbook says that, it means that i don't have enough free disk space to begin with. check to see how much available space you have. if you have less than 1GB then it might get eaten up while you have your computer and various applications going. you can refresh it by restarting your computer, but it'll just get filled up again until you free up more space.

go to your preferences, lonki. sorry about the techy speak

how can i free up more space.
As easy as cleaning out all my files, photo's....
Taking stuff to the "attic" (read burned cd, or usb stick.)
Or do I need to go other places?

yeah, freeing up just means deleting some of your files (and making sure to empty the recycling bin/trash depending on if you're mac or pc, because that stores file space too). backing up files onto CDs you no longer need is a good way to do this.

are you using a mac or pc? maybe check first to see if this is actually the problem. if on a mac, just double click your hard drive icon and look on the bottom and it'll tell you how much disk space you have available. if pc, then i don't know offhand, but it's probably similar.

I'm using a pc, Laptop,

I found preferences, and then?

go to your C drive and rt click and then go to properties

if you have less than a few GBS of free space you'll need to start deleting/backing up to CD, older files

What Julia said.

Btw, do you really need to work with this resolution? 600 dpi is twice the quality needed to be used for any purpose... your file size must be HUGE! :P

it sais I have 5.15 GB
left over.
That should be oke i guess.
I'll start a clean up though.

If you haven't done this recently, or ever, defragmenting your computer (relocating files physical location on the disk in order to create larger chunks for new memory and faster memory accesses on existing memory) will help. Just deleting old/unnecessary files off of your computer will be the biggest free upgrade you can do to prevent this.

Hopefully I don't get too technical with this, (I'm unfortunately in an operating systems class right now so I get to learn about this fun stuff) but the program is using the 'scratch disk' because there is not enough memory for it in your RAM. Running fewer programs and increasing the amount of RAM that photoshop has access to will help performancewise because you won't be getting as many pagefaults (the computer won't have to access the harddrive as often). If you plan on doing a lot more work with files this big, I'd recommend as much RAM as possible (most likely slightly less than 4GB)

my file is huge indeed.
I do notice the difference though as I am using a load of small, small details.

I usually just do a disk cleanup on my drive and it fixes the problem.

my d drive has 2 GB left.
maybe that is more of the problem.

I don't know exactly what is on what.

ah yeah. i forgot about multiple drives on PCs! so i'm guessing your C:/ drive holds your application information and your D:/ drive holds your personal files? so if that one only has 2GB, then it can totally be eaten up while having your computer running.

Oh, and for defragmenting, you go:
disk defragmenter

To change the amount of memory that photoshop can allocate, in photoshop go:
performance
This will also show you which disk is being used as the scratch disk

unless the D:/ drive is referring to a DVD drive. then i don't know.

damnit, I forgot about the whole greater than symbol thing, sorry

You don't need to work with this resolution at all. You need to work with 300 dpi in final dimensions of the project.

But you probably already know that, so I'm helpless :P

what rodrigobhz said.
why are you working in 600 dpi?
Printing standard are only 300 dpi, unless you're working on a really high quality art prints.

Preferences, choose the drive with the biggest harddrive space left.

thank you all for helping me out.
I think I'll start with cleaning up.
Then work on my design again tomorrow.

my scratch disk is on C.
I could still use more space, so i added some.
psherman42
psherman42 on Oct 23 '09 at 1:32pm
while making sure that you have extra scratch disk space is good, because of how expensive (at least 10x slower than RAM) memory accesses to the hard drive are, make sure that you're getting the most out of your RAM. good luck, hopefully you don't run into more of this problem.
