Currently I'm calling it "A for Effort," but I dunno. I'm not totally thrilled with that. Suggest something better.

Criticism/suggestions on the design itself are also welcome.

UPDATE: Made some changes based on Nathan's suggestions. I'm liking this a lot more now.

UPDATE 2: Tweaked the birds, ribbon, and project title.

Or we could talk about something else if you'd prefer.

So...um...(shifts weight awkwardly)...how 'bout those Mets?

Haha I did a volcano project for my first science fair in 4th grade, I remember even then thinking....damn....this is so cliche.

As for a title...hmm... There's One Every Year ...hmmm that stinks...

Fact: every science fair in the US is required by law to have at least one baking soda volcano in addition to at least one potato battery.

Somebody's parents did that for them.

...there may be a title in there somewhere...

nasmo on Jul 19 '11 at 6:52pm
Ooh. I like that idea.

"Blue Ribbon" is good too, although I think it's actually funnier if this project doesn't win any prizes, since even though it's very impressive, it's still such a cliche.

Ha! your comment about the Mets killed me
This is such a great concept and I think it could still use some tweaking. My two cents -
1) Right now the volcano isn't popping for me. I think perhaps it is too obscured by the foliage and a bit of shadow falling on the 'board' might provide some depth..
2) the foliage will provide a good frame, but did you try this on a light blue shirt? I'm thinking the composition of 'pancake mountain' might be a good guide here. .

Maybe a can of baking soda (subtly placed) would add a bit to the fun.

Ha, like that idea, quister. I think, though, that it works best with just one thing being off--in other words, it's a real-looking volcano that has a science fair board behind it, OR it's a real-looking volcano with a can of baking soda next to it. I tried it out and it just felt a little like overkill.

Did make some adjustments based on Nathan's feedback, though, and I'm liking the way this is coming together now. Thoughts?

Looks sooo much better on the blue.

From my perspective, we're down to nit-picky things...

• The birds don't seem right -- too chunky. Try thinner lines.

• With the word 'volcanoes' obscured, it just looks like 'Canoes' at first. Maybe just go with the word 'Volcano' and leave it at that to avoid boat-related confusion.

• Possible titles: "Last Minute Job" - "Bet Your Dad Made That" - "Better Luck Next Year"

Great feedback, man. Thanks. I'll play around with the birds a bit and see if I can get those looking better. And good call on "CANOES," I didn't even think about the boat interpretation of that. I like the idea of the title being obscured by the ash cloud at least somewhat, but I'll try to make more of the word visible.

I'm trying to tie the ideas of Mother Nature and Slacker together for a title, but there may be nothing down that road...

Yeah nasmo, real-looking volcano with a science fair board behind it is the best way to go.

I like the changes so far. I agree the birds are a bit heavy, maybe further away so you get the balance on that side without them attracting too much interest. Also, maybe straighten the curl and lose the shadow at the bottom of the ribbon, a bit too eye-grabbing? Just nit-picking stuff, otherwise, looking good dude =]

Not coming up with any titles, I'll be back if I think of one.

Hmm, see what you mean about the ribbon. I'll see what I can do.

nasmo on Jul 25 '11 at 10:34pm
Thanks for the great title ideas, everybody. It's a tough call, but I think I'm going with "Honorable Mention."

As far as the design goes, I tried to incorporate quister and bygrinstow's feedback in this latest version. I think this is getting pretty close to a sub. Any more suggestions before I finalize it?

I'll be buying this shirt for my son.

It pretty much looks like Lassen as seen across the lake which we camped next to about a month ago...

nasmo on Jul 26 '11 at 12:11pm
Well, I certainly hope I can make that happen. Thanks for all your help.

And yeah, I was definitely going for a Cascades Range look, so I'm glad that came across. The volcano itself is actually based on Rainier.
