UPDATE: how about this version? maybe more wearable? or should I just go with the first red/blue version that everyone liked? I felt like it needed to look a little tougher. But now I can't decide. Can you?

Old post:

I know, for whatever reason, there are so many owl subs nowadays, but I hope there's room for one more before people get all "OWL - that's a zero for you!" Been working on this for a while, it's a bit of a nod to Harryhausen mixed with a reawakened appreciation for the pencil and a subtle owl/mouse joke thrown in for good measure.

This is five colors, but I'm still unsure which five to use... Which combination do you like best? Anyone?

Version 4 is strongest IMO

I'm not sure.. the first one or the last one. Try makeing it grayscale in Photoshop to see how the contrast is between owl and cables?

Thanks guys. Good call gumbolimbo. The contrast is a little sharper with the first version in grayscale - also there are two red tones from the owl in those cables, so maybe it has a little more unity. Though I think the warm/cool contrast is sharper in the 4th version.

Though on the shirt I kind of like the all-warm-tones version too.

I would go with the second color option(probably the only one :P)! The first, third and the forth version have the same 'weight' between the owl and the cables. Both elements have a heavy contrast and strong colors (first and forth) or both are redish colors (third). With the second version the owl is prominent in colors and the cables just adding to it. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks Pam, you've given me some more food for thought... I'm going to tweak this for a while yet...

Here's another one - where the owl comes into the foreground a little more, but without the jarring color shift of the pink/blue:

wow, this is so beautiful Michelle and will undoubtably print. The 1st one on the top for sure! When are you planning on subbing this?

I like the colors of the new version but again the details of the owl are lost in the huddle of the cables.

I like the yellowish version right above the last few comments!

Have you decided on the colors yet? No matter what color scheme you are going to choose it is a beautiful design!

Everytime I see this I'm reminded of the owl Bubo from Clash of the Titans! :)

Blog resurrection! Thanks guys, I ended up confusing myself with all the versions and then spent the last few weeks concentrating on other subs. Also, so many great owl subs here lately (ahem, Terry), I thought I'd give this a little break until I could make up my mind.

Pam, yes! Bubo was absolutely part of the inspiration for this!

The 1st one has such a nice, soft feel to it, more like a penicl drawing and I love the sublte blue, pink and yellow highlights against the sepia-coloured line work.

er, I mean "subtle"
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Aug 21 '09 at 12:43am
When I was younger I sadly used to pronounce the "b" in subtle.

Heh, when I was younger I used to pronounce melancholy "Meh-LANK-oly" and was so disappointed to find out that it was "melon-collie" because that didn't sound like its meaning at all. My life is full of linguistic disappointments like that.
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Aug 21 '09 at 12:55am
I know, it's funny because for the longest time I resisted saying "subtle" correctly because I thought my version expressed the meaning of the word way better.

Ha ha , actually your version for melancholy is very descriptive as well because it has depressed little words in it like "meh" and "lank". I could see why you'd be disappointed. )

Think there's room for more owl subs when they're this gorgeous! Also this is so completely different in concept and style. Here's hoping they'll print both!

Oh, when I said "1st one" I didn't mean the 1st version, but the latest one with the brown sepia tones.

Thanks! I guess I should just sub and move on to the next thing. Perhaps an image of a dog surrounded by cantaloupe...

Are you going to do a flash presentation or just the traditional template? I think the sepia version for the main presentation and then a colour option on a tee would be good - my second favourite version is the one on the bottom with the purple/gold owl and gold wires.

I'm a fan of the red/blue
littleclyde
   littleclyde on Aug 21 '09 at 1:42am
Yeah, Flash for this one, probably exactly like you suggested. The nice thing about the non-sepia version you like is that it's only five colors, so could be printed as an oversize print. Be nice to have that as an option as well. Thanks for all the input!
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Aug 21 '09 at 1:42am
I agree, that one is really nice too and would be a solid choice as well for a colour option.
littleclyde
   littleclyde on Aug 21 '09 at 1:50am
Thanks Tikimasters. This is why I can't decide. The red/blue was my initial color idea, and I still like it a lot as an image. The bold colors and colored-pencilness of it really appeal to me. However, when I think about going to the closet and picking out something to wear, I find it becomes less appealing, and then I tend more towards the sepia or the less colorful purple/gold.
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Aug 21 '09 at 2:02am
Michelle - yes, an oversize print option would be great to have!

So the sepia version would need to be simulated process I'm guessing? You'd be surprised what they can do with it.

I would definitely wear the sepia version and think it has the broadest appeal for both sexes however the purple/gold wires version would be awesome for women.
littleclyde
   littleclyde on Aug 21 '09 at 2:07am
Nope, sepia is 7 colors, but I think I read somewhere that 5 colors is the limit for oversized printing.
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Aug 21 '09 at 2:14am
Oh, I didn't even know that! Wow, well I'm even more impressed because the sepia version looks like it should require simulated process. Anyway, the sepia looks like the perfect size to me on the tee.
