...and I'm mostly OK with it.

I try to score as much work as I can... usually this means everything that comes through here, though I'm sure I miss the occasional "early drop". The con to this is that there is a LOT of work that is approved by Threadless that deserves a one or lower. I have no shame in giving zeroes, because that's what they're there for: to be given. Still, it is unsettling to me that I have in essence given more zeroes than I've given 2-5 combined. It worries me from a general quality standpoint (I don't think I'm very unfair with my scoring), but also makes me wonder if I should take more time with my scoring in case I might be simply missing something. At the same time, I can't imagine having a vote-average above a 2... just as a 3 or higher score implies most of the voters felt OK or better about your work, a too-high average would, for me, make me feel less discerning, as if anything is good enough.

What do y'all think on the vote-average question. Does yours surprise you or fit what you believe it should? Are you more apt to disdain someone with a too-low average? distrust someone with a too-high one? Have you scored less or altered your habits based on seeing your average slip?

Congratulations! I rarely score anything anymore, but I think at one point my average was below 2. I was a bit self conscious about it, but then I realised it wasn't a bad thing at all.

that's impressive, I think I'm a pretty solid 1-or-2-er. Though I like to put some thought behind my scoring if I have time to kill

I think since the 2k10 comp, I've been giving more 4s and 5s... seems like people have been stepping up their game.

Usually for the average subs, I'll give a 2. It gets a 2 if it shows some effort, but the design is only so-so. If it looks like it took 5 minutes to create then I'll give it a 1.

I have the same mode as vv, since my average is pretty high (2.54) If the concept and effort is there, I generally score a 2. It it's just no hope for it or stolen, then 0 or 1. I do give out a ton of 5's even if it's not perfect in my mind.

I mostly avoid 5s unless I do consider it to have a perfection to it. Something I either must buy, or feel deserves a print without fail. There are some rare 5s for work that I know is going to be destroyed in scoring but deserves better, but overall, I know that if I submit a design, I want the score the world feels I deserve. If I put something out that doesn't resonate, yeah, I might disagree, but I'm also never going to improve and try new things unless I'm seeing that the old things just aren't working.

I see zero-to-two as "needs work" and three-to-five as "this would deserve a print if it got it". 3 is usually for work I "get" but don't love, and 2 is usually for work I would like a lot with better execution or some alteration. Not like "man, I wish this was blue instead" sort of stuff, but changes that would alter the piece dramatically for the better. I also find that I send a lot of ones and zeroes people's way for reasons other people wouldn't. A good drawing that makes a terrible shirt gets a one at best (90% of sketchbook faces fall into this category). Work that feels incredibly tired to me gets lower scores unless something huge is done with it (woe be the person who subs a new red riding hood design and can't improve on Red). For me, I'd rather put off a meal than eat bland food, and so, a lot of stuff suffers simply for not bringing anything to the table. If I wanted boring designs, I'd print my own. There's a lot riding on grabbing my attention immediately when I'm voting, because there is really a lot of uninspired work out there. When I blog, I only focus on 4 or above. On the other hand, I'm currently wearing Music Business Remastered, which I scored horribly, but which became far more appealing once I saw it in print. I'm sure I'm not alone there.

And I agree, VV, that many Loves comps bring out some amazing work. 2k10 has pushed a lot of designers (if also making others subscribe to a "trends equal easy sales" philosophy) and I have definitely appreciated a bunch of the work. The Less Is More loves and New Art New Ideas were similarly exciting. But then there are other loves challenges that I know have sunk my score. The "green" challenge made me want to cry with all the cliches, for example. I have this horrible feeling this new Shoes one will be similar... something about it screams "people will look at it too literally and just draw shoes or try too hard to be clever"

My average is above 3, because I skip the designs I don't dig.

(blog resurrection)

i give most things 1s and 2s.

5$s i exclusively reserve for ones i want ones i will definitely buy and wear.

5s are for ones i think deserve a good score, but won't wear.

4s are for subs that are exceptional and i think deserve to be printed.

3s for the subs that i think are clever, but could be executed better or vice versa.

2s for ones that are not good, but better than a 1. mostly if i feel bad for subs i would usually give a 1, haha.

1s are for most of the slosh that i dont think are good or deserve any attention.

0s for copycats, incredibly redundant jokes, OR ANYTHING WITH BOOBS IN IT. I HATE BOOBS.

out of curiosity, did you rate my first sub? would be curious to know what you think. I'm always spot on with your thoughts and comments on woot, but I see me design with rose colored glasses, so anyway, your feedback would be respected if you don't mind

Nice blog!

For me, I love to go around looking at people's designs for art admiration and inspiration. Generally when I find a design that tickles me, or impresses me with the way it's drawn where I'm not able to do, I will give 4-5 and express my thoughts in the comment space. Those that I don't like or get the message, or look too simple and messy, I'll just skip it without any score.

I don't really believe in this scoring as a guide to print though. It's subjective and manipulative sometimes...

And, I'm not a fan of skulls and violent prints. Something refreshing and pleasing will interest me.
