Hey guys!

As some of y'all know, I hail more from the world of woot than that of Threadless. While I'm mostly known over there for being curmudgeonly and reactionary, I've also been able to foster ties with some of their best and most promising artists, which to me makes the other unique woot issues more tolerable.

As part of this, I have been "co-sponsoring" an underground shirt contest for some of the wooters I feel have the most talent and will profit most from getting out of the woot box. The hope is that, with motivation to enter elsewhere, and get a feel for another site's expectations, it will help the designers escape the often tight limitations woot puts on them and really realize their full potential.

Right now, I am planning a collaborative effort for this group. I think working with someone else helps ideas develop even deeper and further than you originally imagined. But since our group is not a huge one, and I don't expect everyone to take part, I thought it might be even better if I could find some Threadless peeps who might be willing to join in and collaborate as part of the experiment.

The truth is, there's no huge benefit for you. You'd be collaborating with designers you don't know, some more polished than others, and any prize for this collaboration would be at the sole discretion of Threadless, where the final products would likely be submit. I know many of you are busy with real-world projects and personal design work. But I think that working with someone who has been there before, and who really believes in shirt design, could help some of these designers a lot, so if any of you alumni would be willing to take the time to participate, it would be hugely appreciated.

If you're interested in even considering this, feel free to contact me for more information, via IM, via the email on my blog, or via posting here. I feel that this is an opportunity that could help better the online tee-design world, and I'm excited just thinking about what could come of it. Thank you all for taking the time to read.

(incidentally, if you are one of those wooters who are part of this collaborative, and you stumble upon this, keep it hush-hush, or it won't be a surprise)

I've actully had a print both places, I hope you aren't looking for just alumni. There are several artists here that haven't had a print yet and are amazing.

There certainly are, Jim. I've seen lots of very talented people without shields around here.

I am admittedly mostly looking for alumni, simply because you can't question the shield... if you've been printed here, you've probably got something strong in you artistically. That said, I would certainly consider the right non-alums if they were interested. I know there are plenty of non-shieldy people who would be perfect for this, as well. I just don't want to open it up to every last designer here, if you know what I mean, so alums would definitely be preferred, but I'd certainly consider any quality and experienced designer who was interested.

Cool idea. Curious to see where this goes. Collaborative work can be really powerful when done right.

I agree, david, which is part of why I'm hoping at least a few people might be interested

I might be interested, but alas no shield!

Depending on the deadline / time constraints, I may or may not be able to participate, but I'm interested. I'll send you an email so you can contact me as this develops.

i didn't know you were a wooter

I got a question for you adder - I got asked to do a woot shirt like a year ago and I still have not gotten around to it. They are no-go on oversized stuff and I just haven't gotten inspired. any suggestions on what I should do? (getting out of the one color oversized world and into the funny shirt biz is not my comfort zone)

also, I would be down for a woot effort. anything to attract fresh peeps to the threadless hause

Eric, you're definitely experienced enough to be perfect for the idea, shield or no... I've seen your name around enough to know your level of quality. And to be shocked you're not an alum here.

Isajoe... woot is a weird place for designers, I think, because it's a non-shirt crowd crammed into a shirt site. What I'd say is go for whatever you feel best about... they do decent quality prints and even if you sell poorly there, it's still likely a huge chunk of tees sold at one pop. Wooters are totally unpredictable when it comes to the curated pieces, so it's better to take a risk with something that you're truly proud of than to put out something hoping to hit their fanbase, and still undersell. That's a big thing for any designer looking to print there... just like you can't go into Threadless saying "Hells yes, I'm gonna win!", you can't go to woot thinking "hell yes, I'm gonna sell!" Because the wooters will almost always disappoint.

As for all of you, you can contact me at 5songsinc (at) gmail (dot) com, or directly at Adder_XYU (at) hotmail (dot) com. If you don't pop back here, I'll email you as we get closer to the time (it'd be, as I said, through November, so let's presume a month-ish to work on it).

Thanks for the response! I don't know how many people we're gonna have on the woot-side (I know we've got a handful already, though), but I'm excited there's some interest here! It's very appreciated
