on threadies.org they have a sketch to vector run through for photoshop. I've never used illustrator so i wouldn't know the differences, but maybe that could help?

Live Trace in Illustrator will give you quick, moderate, yet often crappy results.... to make it look good, you literally have to trace your whole drawing using the Pen tool
