from news.com.au:
'AN 81-year-old man has shot himself dead with an elaborate suicide robot built using plans downloaded from the internet. The Gold Coast man, who lived alone, left notes of his plans and thoughts as he struggled to come to terms with demands by interstate relatives that he move out his home and into care. He spent hours searching the internet for a way to kill himself, downloaded what he needed and then built a complex machine that would remotely fire a gun. He set the device up in his driveway about 7am yesterday, placed himself in front of it and set it in motion. His notes explained that he chose the driveway as he knew there were tradesmen working next door who would find his body. The plan worked as the workmen heard the gunshots and ran to investigate. The machine was attached to a .22 semi-automatic pistol loaded with four bullets. It was able to fire multiple shots into the man's head after he activated it. ' ![]() mama mia So like us.
I've noticed something and I wonder if people here have an opinion on it.
I've seen a few designs here I wanted to purchase that were pretty brilliant that dropped out early. If the feedback was any indicator, it would seem like somehow people resented the design not being a product of hard work, artistically. I can't speak for anyone else but I personally love simple, clever designs. If the message is palletable and concise, I don't need it to look like a Rembrandt. Quite the opposite, actually. The simpler it is, the quicker the message is received. Anyhow, question is this, and its not limited to this site but art in general: How important is technical talent, really, in the quality of a piece of art? If the message works with simplistic execution, why doll it up? Is it fair to begrudge someone for executing something that, technically, could be done in a couple of minutes if the message still resonates? Doesn't the thinking up of the message itself get any credit? Maybe you could technically of done it in 3 minutes, just like you could technically write the world's best poem in 30 seconds. But would you ever of thought up the idea to begin with? Just some food for thought. Thread inspired by me noticing that around 10 designs I gave a 5 to dropped out early while more technically impressive designs getting 1s, 2s and 3s from me make the cut. Its not limited to here at all, though, this was just the catalyst for discussion. |
