Can anyone advise?

I wanted to know if I can use tints of the 8 colours and still be within the limits or does each tint count as another colour

see design:

tints count as individual colors. the only way you can get around this is, if you want to stay within the 8 color limit, is to fake tints by using halftones.

otherwise, you can still have it printed using simulated process.

Thanks phiffer
I imagine it is a more expensive process. I wonder if they are keen on doing it and weather it might sway there judgement?

I have been converting my images to halftones... what is this "simulated process"?

sorry for the noob question. What are half tones? Will they allow me to use more than 8 colors without using the simulated process?

So basically cutting the color with white is a halftone? Sorry like I said total noob. Just got illustrator and I am currently in the process of learning how to use it. I have never done artwork outside of paper and ink/pencil before.

Well, halftones are the little dots, which create the illusion of being a lighter shade by getting smaller against white, or can be mixed with other little dots of a different colour. So like, red dots with blue dots might give the illusion of purple, without having to use a separate ink.

Thanks good to know and very helpful. If you don't mind terribly could you tell me if I am correct in assuming that in Illustrator I would use a color fill then go back over top of it with the other color or swatch in order to create the half tone?

You could just make a swatch with the background colour and the halftone on it if you want the dots to be consistently spaced and sized.

Or else this tutorial tells you how to make them fade away.
