I'm going to be visiting NYC for the Gen Art Film Festival next week and I wanna do some cool non-tourist stuff. Any suggestions?

If you've seen one of these banners hanging in NYC, I designed it.

Well the touristy stuff is fun, but it depends on your definition of touristy. I dont mean going to the empire states building or the statue of liberty, but if you go to soho there are some awesome galleries there, you can go to the moma, you can go to a broadway show, get tickets over in times square for cheaper if you are willing to wait in line. Wednesday is a good day to go do that because they have matinee's. I haven't gone to very many clubs in the city since I was a kid, so Im sorry I can't recommend any because they have probably been all closed down or renamed or something.

Go to the village and walk around, there are tons of shops and places to hang out, Go to a Yankee game, or a Mets game, neither are in the city, but the Bronx and Queens arent far away from it at all, easy train ride.

theres a shitload to do, sometimes its best to walk around and just stumble onto it.

I love how people want to do touristy things, but hate being labelled as a tourist.

Cloisters is always nice, I'm all for uptown but because I don't like how crowded it is below 96th.

Go tour the columbia campus, look at all the sculpture, get your picture taken with an original Jacques Lipschitz there (or however he's spelled). A lot of nice sculpture there, take your picture in front of the place on campus they used in the Ghostbusters film.

Oh I know I'll be a tourist, I mean a spade is a spade. And I'm gonna do the standard NYC trip stuff like visit the statue of liberty and go to the moma. Thanks for the ideas!

the cloisters is a great great suggestion. there's nothing non-touristy you can do in ny aside from struggle to find a job and a decent, affordable apartment to rent and even then....

you can always rock climb in central park

Go see a taping of the Colbert Report- it's pretty easy to get stand-by tickets, just show up at the studio at 4 or 4:30 or something. (it's much easier to see Colbert than the Daily Show or Conan, and it's a hell of a better experience, too.)

You can see really good cheap (or free depending on the night/time) improv and comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater

yelp.com is good for finding places locals like

Greenwich Village is a good suggestion, SoHo, Chelsea, Lower East Side... stay away from Times Square as much as possible.

Some more suggestions in this blog.
