newegg ftw.

if you have the physical ability to read one of the 1,000,00 build your own pc tutorials on the web(or if you already know how) and you can successfully operate a screw driver...you could build your own

what do you want to do w/ the computer? what is your budget? do you want to game on it?

are you looking for a laptop or desktop?

BELOW $2000????..... that aint budget son =p

especially for the home brew you could build the pretty awesome computer for $2K these days.

in fact if you don't game / edit alot of video you should probably spend less than that.

of course if you buy a pre built box you get support / warr blah blah blah etc.

let's see real quick

E8400 $200~ (C2Duo 45nm proc )
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L $89.99
Crucial Ballistix 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 $109.99
EVGA 512-P3-N861 (9600GT ) $150

then blah blah blah hard drive $100~ 500GB SATA 3.0GB drive (or ea if you want more than 1 say)

optical drive $30~ (Samsung / NEC ..liteOn DVD burner OEM)

case /psu now cases you have to look at every day so it is hard to say what other people will like... for my part I like LianLi cases a lot.

but figure $100~ (+/- ) for a quality one (you can spend a lot more if you want to but $100-130 generally gets you in the door on a pretty good case.)

many of the quality cases don't come w/ a PSU other cases come w/ PSU's that SUCK and a few come w/ decent PSU's (Antec cases for example)

so if you chose a case w/out a psu for the rig I purpose this would be more than adequate

CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX $60~ (after rebate)

you'd want to look for quality brands and ideally 80+ certification for high energy efficiency.

so then ball park for this tower?

$850~ or so (assuming a $100 case and a single $100ish HD)

add a nice LCD monitor

this one for example

SAMSUNG 220WM Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor

$269.99 (before $30 mir) and throw in $100 or so for a nice mouse and keyboard

you'd be right about $1230 + tax shipping

you'd obviously need a OS that could range from $0 (ubuntu) to $289.99 vista ultimate retail

you could also get OEM vista for less (but that will have certain limitations ... namely you'll have to decide between 32bit or 64bit when purchasing and unlike retail versions OEM are activated w/ the orig hardware so if you upgrade your computer down the line you have to buy a new license for windows)

now this would be honestly overkill for general computing but since you said you had the budget it would be pretty nice and fast and if you decided to game a bit well you certainly could.

you could save a lot of money going a different way (say G35 chipset mb w/ built in video) ...etc other options.

you could also spend a lot more (c2quad /// SLI mb DDR3..etc)

but I think this $1300~ machine would bring the hurt for awhile and all.

I don't think you'll need anything more than about 1200 to buy a decent computer with all the fixxings then.

jesus christ, if you have $2,000 to spend on a computer, you could build an absolute monster.

i'm hoping to build a new computer over the summer. i'm also hoping not to spend more than $500 on it.

the only things i'll really need are:
-a new case (w/ PSU included preferably)
-motherboard (w/ onboard sound because i don't care about sound)
-cpu
-graphics card

I can probably reuse my current DVDRW drive, and if I want a second, they're cheap enough. And I love my current monitor. Maybe I'll get a new keyboard simply because mine is so gross and dirty and I really don't wanna take the time to clean it.

and i still haven't decided if i'm gonna fully convert to Ubuntu or dual-boot with Windows

maddingo on Apr 24 '08 at 2:51pm
kewl... yeah it is pretty satisfying building your own computer

first time it is best if you have a buddy that has done it before ..but not a show stopper.

just read up on some guides and remember to ground your self and handle things carefully... if you have to manhandle anything while building you are probably doing it wrong =p

let me know if you need any advice / help when you get into it.

that's good to know, 'cause i don't wanna have to give up PC gaming (even though i'm not a hardcore gamer).

how's that graphics card you have? i'm hoping something like that will be pretty cheap when i start buying.

maddingo on Apr 24 '08 at 3:02pm
well... it is "ok"

it was pissing me off.. at first cause if you google blank screen crashes 9600GT you'll understand why

but it seems (knocks on wood) the new drivers from nvidia have fixed it.... I've not had the really annoying blank screen crash since updating to the newest drivers anyway).

but assuming the whole steam game /screen crash thing is actually fixed it is pretty decent for the $150~ price point the 9600GT's are at now.

   tracerbullet on Apr 24 '08 at 3:03pm
does it have stable linux drivers?
maddingo
maddingo on Apr 24 '08 at 3:09pm
ummm that is a really good question... I'm not running Linux on that PC

well ok... so nvidia has "beta" 9600GT linux drivers ... i can't speak to how well they work cause I'm not running Linux on this machine.

in general nvidia has done better w/ linux support than ATI however.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Apr 24 '08 at 3:11pm
i'm definitely avoiding ATI. my current ATI card has had plenty of problems over the years.
maddingo
maddingo on Apr 24 '08 at 3:19pm
well... yeah the most problems i have ever had w/ a video card was with my AIW9600pro

(turner died TWICE) ... 1st time under warranty so ATI replaced it. 2nd time right after the warr expired so I threw a PCI tuner card in.

but even when the tuner worked ATI's MMC thing is the biggest piece o' crap ever.

also the driver roulette I had to play to find the right combination of which versions of what broke the fewest things got kinda tiresome.
