how do i get my hand-drawn stuff properly formatted to be on a t-shirt??

this seems like it would be simple, but i cant figure it out! i'm so frusturated!
i need help with how to scan a drawing in and edit it appropriately so it would work for putting on a shirt. the area around my design has to be transparent, doesn't it? the only thing thats sort of worked out is using the color select tool in photoshop and deleting all the white, but it looks really bad. and i would rather use illustrator. if anyone has experience with using their hand-drawn stuff for threadless please please please help me out :)

I also need help. I painted my design and I have never used photoshop. Does anyone have photoshop guides? Also, how do I use the template, I mean how do I get my design on the t-shirt template?
