I think that McCain just lost his entire "Obama has no experience" speech if he's picking a first-term governor as his VP.

I think it was a smart move. The democratic split, between hillary and obama, will no doubt lose democratic voters strictly because of the female presence. I think too many uneducated voters make emotional decisions based on who they "like". I dunno, as far as I see it, I could kinda care less.
kirstenlovesdinner
kirstenlovesdinner on Aug 29 '08 at 10:38am
McCain really should have picked someone with an economic background since that's where he's weak. Especially with the economy being the number one issue.

i'll be interested to hear them state the case for why she should be just a hearbeat away from being president...

He's definitely hoping Palin will grab the Hillary swing voters. I'm sorry but Hillary supporters who are now supporting McCain was clearly wanted her to win because she was a woman and not because she was the best candidate. The fact that McCain is attempting to woo a crowd that is more concerned gender than qualifications just shows what type of leader he'd be.

Obama/Biden '08. Let's make it happen!

Too bad Michael Moore can't use his "Would you send your kid to Iraq?" schtick.

American politics is, however, weird.

Obama picked an old guy, cos he's inexperienced. McCain picked a young woman, cos he's an old man. And people concerned by either of those facts are now appeased.

What does the Vice-President actually do?

CRAZY!!??!

I just heard all this on the radio

she was the mayor of my little town before becoming governor

I am biased cause I know Sarah,

My sister is her hairstylist (she is excited her highlights are on the national stage)

I made a mixtape for her new baby

She is an Alaskan girl so she kicks ass -

Quite an interesting development

we alaskans are not used to this type of attention

haha -

thing about sarah that mccain does not know - she is VERY independent and stubborn and speaks her mind -

she is the kinda gal who goes on week long snowmachining trip in the middle of winter - she was pregnant in office up until the 8th month before telling anybody - her husband is one of those crazy irondog men - (he does long range iditarodesque snowmachine rallys)

she took on the whole law enforcement department up here and shook the hell out of them

she is gonna be a firecracker, you just wait -

It seems like a good choice when it comes to bringing in voters. He can get women, some Hillary supporters, and more conservatives who are looking for pro-life and anti gay marriage.

And Joe is sure making her sound cool, lol.

it does not seem to be to smart of a pick

alaska ALWAYS goes republican - just the way it is - so maccain aint getting a state - and even though we have 2 votes in the college of electorials -

so it is all about the gender thing - which is a sign of being desperate or smart... not sure

SoldierofGondor
SoldierofGondor on Aug 29 '08 at 11:38am
Yea, I was thinking that. Alaska doesn't really represent an area of the country (like winning over the south or something), so it doesn't really win states over.

Ste7en
   Ste7en on Aug 29 '08 at 11:51am
Haha, really?

1. He is the one running for president. Inexperience in a VP, has nothing to do with anything. The benefit of being VP is experience. He is also setting up another woman to have a chance at President in the future as VPs often go on to run. This is a very important factor for women voting. This will motivate older women, especially, to vote for the McCain ticket. If you don't think its true, you're kidding yourself.

2. Statistically VPs rarely affect the vote, and almost never get someone more than a single swing state that they might have anyway.

3. Mccain is going to get the republican vote no matter what, so it doesnt matter who he picks. Obama is so liberal, that even if McCain isn't on the best terms with his party, they will be motivated to vote just by how socialist liberal Obama is.

4. Isa, McCain knows. Don't think he doesn't. McCain is exactly the same type of person, but without a uterus

So all in all, regardless of my feelings about the two candidates (I dont like either), I think McCain is playing his cards much better than Obama. Obama should be leading the polls by 30 pts right now. There is no reason this election should be close, just by the virtue of being a changeover year because Bush was so hated, but it is close and Obama has not held a steady lead, and when push comes to shove you're going to see some very unexpected voting this election.

I think experiance in a VP is very important in this race because it's been a topic for something whether McCain's health can hold out in his possible presidency.

That, in itself, is a damn good reason to pick a good VP.

@ Ste7en: McCain is really old, this has to be taken into consideration. The possibility of something happening to him while he is office goes up. Therefore an inexperienced VP would be stepping into his place. I do take vp's into consideration personally. I need to do more research but when McCain became the Republican nominee I told myself that I would scrutinize his vp more than others just for age reasons.
Twiggyhall
Twiggyhall on Aug 29 '08 at 1:51pm
Palin for VP????? Sweet!!

skeev
skeev on Aug 29 '08 at 1:51pm
You have to scrutinize both.

Let's face it, Obama has a slightly higher assassination risk when this country is full of Klan and Nazi nutjobs all telling themselves they want to be the one to pull the trigger should he get elected.

You have to look at Biden stepping in after an assassination and Palin stepping in after a massive stroke.

I really think you guys are all fooling yourselves. How many of you will change who you vote for based on the VP? I mean, sure scrutinize away, but most people know they are voting for one party or another before the candidates even attempt to run. I don't believe any one of you would actually go "you know, im voting mccain because I dont want biden in the white house if obama is assassinated" or the other way around.

Hypothetically I could see such extreme cases where like George Bush the third is the VP pick for some awesome moderate-fiscal conservative causing all the moderates to jump ship, but really the VP never decides anything, before or in the white house.
jaywalkergraphics
jaywalkergraphics on Aug 29 '08 at 2:04pm
I know nothing, but it does seem like both candidates have made the obvious move. Ironically, by trying to address their opponent's attacks, they have validated them.

What will they ever talk about now, without hot-button obvious calling card issues? Favre?

Also, Palin's kinda cute. That's a plus, because McCain looks like Hannibal.
skeev
skeev on Aug 29 '08 at 2:32pm
I don't think it's foolish at all to consider the whole picture when choosing your vote.

If it were so unimportant why would the choosing of a VP be such an important topic? Why would anyone bother praising Obama's pick because Biden brings the experiance he lacks?

One more consideration, the VP usually...not always...but usually gets groomed for the next election.
Ste7en
   Ste7en on Aug 29 '08 at 3:17pm
I'm not saying its foolish to consider the pick, I'm saying you're fooish if you think it will affect votes. People do not switch parties because of VPs. Its just how it works.

If Obama had picked someone who could bring him back down to earth, an actual liberal who stands for things like the environment, equal rights, and health care enough to impact the presidency, I might have decided to vote for him. Biden was kind of a surprising choice, but it was pretty safe, and it doesn't change my opinion. On the other hand, there's no one McCain could have possibly picked as a running mate that would have changed my mind at all.
shakethesheets
shakethesheets on Aug 29 '08 at 3:32pm
I don't think Obama is more liberal than he appears. How he appears is smack dab in the middle, and how he will actually be as a president depends on how much he's been lying throughout the campaign. But I do think he's a lot like Bush.
shirtflirt

she seems like a great woman/ politician. but i can't get behind mccain's stances on international diplomacy.

i don't really know what barack wants other than universal health care and to raise taxes...neither of which seem appealing to me.

shakethesheets

in the middle of the American political spectrum, between Democrat and Republican, between liberal and conservative...

I don't know, in all honesty I have absolutely no idea what to believe from Obama, he's said just about everything, so if you want to find that he supports one thing, you can find a quote about that, but there will also be one showing how he's against it.
