What I don't get is how people expect to get good employees by only offering non-paid internships that you need to sign up for a job site that costs money to even apply for. I guess they do or they would stop. Who are these people paying 50 bucks a month to work for free in New York City?
basically, intern is slang for "let's see if this dude is ok" and if you pass that test then they can refer you to other jobs or hire you for their own as you've passed the test.
i'm thinking there are quite a bit of kids with wealthy parents that will support them while they do the internship. one of my roommates had something like 5 unpaid internships.
I'll tell you a story that I have to keep vague for reasons you'll understand.
I know someone that considers themselves a photographer.
They take mostly black and white pictures with a point and shoot.
They're well connected in the music scene and they go to shows almost every night. They're taking pictures all the time. They share their photos with bands and take a lot of gigs that pay barely anything though usually nothing. They made a zine with some other people that got picked up by the local paper and they got even more popular in the scene. They still don't make a lot of money (yet) but they're on their way to being known as the go-to photographer within their circle. It's only a matter of time.
This person has a ton of passion but no technical knowledge (that's changing all the time). This person, also, is double your age.
If you go out into the world and show what you can do, be as social as possible in your circles, keep your goals in mind, and keep at it ... eventually people will be coming to you for work.

intern is slang for "let's get work for free and if he sucks he's only here for 12 weeks anyways before we another kid to work for free."

I was hired on after my internship. Granted, my internship actually paid, so it wasn't as bad. "
