love your stuff mike ...just some times I wish there was more contrast .. just a personal preference though
stickymike
   stickymike on Jun 09 '06 at 12:25am
yeh, its something I need to work on, I tend to get too color oriented, and lose track of contrast

Great use of light and really like the smooth blend of colours. Some of the subjects are a little macabre for my taste though. Nevertheless, keep up the nice work!

these are great mike!

how do they teach illustration classes, exactly? i've noticed a few illustration students come out with that type of james jean-esque coloring style (which i think is awesome), and i'm wondering if they have you study other prominent illustrators? i'm guessing the set up is different than a basic drawing class.

great great stuff, i need to dabble deeper into digital coloring...how long does on take you on average? what's your technique?
scan the sketch and just make the whole thing digitally, or do you actually do a lined version first?

hey thanks everybody!

sonmi - Our illustration classes are actually just short of totally lame (aside from the one im in now which is totally challenging..) I learned how to color through fine arts training, my freshman year life drawing teacher was amazing, and he showed us this TERRIBLE way to apply pastel, but he assured us it was for the best...I learned how to see color in a whole new way in 2 weeks, it was a huge step, I definately learned more about color from life drawing, im heavily inspired by James Jean though (he OWNS at life drawing/painting btw) as well as people like my friend Alex www.redbeardead.com

Trav- its a fairly easy process, hit me up on myspace or email and I can break it all down for you, but I scan in pencil lines, clean them up and pull them off the paper and color under them using a series of layers

again...thanks everyone...

Whats the best way you find to make lines colored? Because I looked around the Internet and I found a midly complex way using layer masks, I was wondering what your method was.

BTW awesome illustrations, if I had to nitpick over one thing it would be that the shading is inconsistent in some of the pictures, like the one with the priest. Not so much in the sense of lighting (but there's still a bit of an issue with the two different light sources - the one on the priest and the source coming from the flaming car, and each object only seems to be lit by one of the sources), but rather because the face is shaded much more detailed than the robes, and it looks a bit odd.

That being said, I'm an arse, and your illustrations are amazing, especially the colors.
stickymike
   stickymike on Jun 10 '06 at 7:15pm
Jiggly - If the lines are on their own layer (theres a process to remove the linework from a scanned drawing onto its own layer) you can just click lock transparent pixels in the layers window (its a checkerboad looking button on the top left) and then select any color and alt+backspace to fill

I hope that answers your question

Jigglyman on Jun 10 '06 at 7:27pm
Thanks - but what's that process you mentioned? IO jsut set my linework on Multiply and hope for the best, but how do you actually seperate it?

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

ok ok so here's an impression i have (not of stickymike, though) can you guess who it is?

"looks like someone is self obsessed with himself assuming we even care about there so called "art". at least i don't have to brag about what I do four a living, and i DO have a living. but i don't brag about it. i bet you have a lot of other artists that are jealous of your "abilities". it's amazing you think you have to validate yourself this way."

end scene!

and on with my own bad self's words. yes yes you're great and good and all of that. how the heck do you get your stuff published? because it's good and stuff. and i can do pinups etc too! but i don't paint liek you so i'd prolly not be chosen...wait! this is about you though. your stuff is really good. but flash should have a different top...i stick by that.

awesome work,
i love that b&w one
stickymike
   stickymike on Jun 11 '06 at 4:42pm
jigglyman, the first half of that is how i do it, its a bit different, but it works (instead of 2 l;ayers I use one, and after deleting the white, I select/inverse and cut and paste, and delete the original layer, and use alt +backspace to fill thel ines instead of brushing the whole thing like that tutorial says, its much easier.

gimetzco, bananaphone? I dunno, hes the only one who gives me shit....
btw, none of that stuff is published, its all school work, except for the CD cover and AJB pinup that is....but they were people that contacted me, one through another forum, and the band from myspace. I get a request from a band about every other day or so...its crazy.

Janell - landscapes, though I guess I havent really tried..

thanks guys!
