I just got some lovely threadless t shirts. I wore them, I sweated with sheer glee, and now I need to wash them. The problem is though that I don't have a cold wash option on my machine.

Does anyone know if I can get away with using the 40 degree cotton option without ruining them? Or perhaps delicates at 40?

Or am I going to have to handwash them everytime to protect their awesome-ness?

The girlies will shrink more because they're cotton though. The guys are 50% polyester (ew!) so probably won't shrink. I'm a little paranoid when I wash my small tees that they'll shrink so put them on cold, but the mediums I put on a warm wash and haven't noticed anything go wrong so far.

what is your coldest option? 40 or 30? I normally was them at 30, which is equivalent to cold i think..

Ta for the answers so far :)

40 is the coldest wash option I can get. And my tee's should be 50% poly I think. I don't really want to risk shrinking them too much, as they fit more or less perfectly now.

What sort of shrinkage are we talking about through a normal wash?

I would hand wash them, just to be safe.

Make sure you line dry!

I wash my (guys, poly blend) tees on warm and dry them on high heat because I want them to shrink a little. They shrink a little (mainly from the drying, not washing) but nothing huge.

You should be fine unless your shirts are already really tight on you.

Thanks again!

So the general conensus would be...

Hand wash to be safe and line dry for the least shrinkage?

But, sorry, when it comes to the drying, where the shrinking really comes in...if I stick it on the radiator do you think I'd see less shrinkage than using a tumble dryer?

Not that I have a tumble dryer :) Just wondering on that one. Line drying seems to be out at the mo' as the weather is awful.

i just buy a size larger to avoid all this nonsense. girly xl shrinks to the perfect size for me. maybe just buy larger shirts in the future so that you can wash and dry them without worrying?

Thats a funky looking clothes horse :) Looks up to the task though. I'll keep an eye out for something similar. I was going to buy one ages ago but the time taken to get it home would have cut into valuable drinking time.

I'd get the next size up jet but I'm already XL. Even with shrinkage XXL might be a bit too much. I'll think about it for the next batch I buy though. I'll have to check the sizes.

The difference in US and European sizes confuses me a fair bit. But now I've got some XL I can compare US to the shirts I get over here in Blighty.

Thanks for all the help!

yeah, that might be a big difference. the girly sizes are much closer in dimensions and they shrink more.

I always wash mine same as every other item of clothing I own. About 40 degrees normal I think. I've had no problems so far.

You could also hang shirts in your shower to dry.

I would try the shower but the mold and damp probably aren't the best :) Could work on the stair bannisters though...

Really Bramish? Hmmm, see if I hadn't have checked the label then I would have done just that. I'm a little tempted to try that with one shirt and see how it goes. But that means potentially sacrificing one shirt, and I love them all so.

Hurrah! I washed on 40 and the shirts I fine. I did dry them on my new clothes horse though, called Red Rum.
