It used to be cool, the image of Dean Martin, Cary Grant... smoking! However in the last several years it's become taboo - at least in the states.

The truth is, we've all either seen it, done it or been given it - the evil "stink-eye". More infamous with the crying baby in a restaurant - now the common smoker catches it all too frequently.

I think there is going to be a backlash, the rebels and 'cool' kids will bring it back in vogue. So the next time you see a smoker, don't give the stink-eye, wink or nod with acceptance like your hip to their game - you're in the 'in' crowd.

oh, by the way I'm not a smoker but I support them. We all want to look cool.

just because something looks "cool" doesn't negate the fact that it smells awful and is terrible for your health.

smoking is banned in restaurants and most buildings in mass, not sure about other states.

Well teens will always think it's cool because it's something they're not supposed to do and it's something that adults do. Though I think that it's funny that it's a form of rebellion. You're not sticking it to the man, you're lining his very deep pockets.

Ireland has a smoking ban too (we had it first I might add, one of the few times we're actually ahead of the pack), and it's awesome. Smoking is the most absolutely inanely retarded thing, I honestly don't know how people today still let themselves become addicted given that we know how bad it is for you.

Granted in the past people supposedly didn't know any better, but now? There's really no excuse... So tempted to post a big dirty ole picture of some lung cancer...

What about sex? Does it get you out of breath too? Should you quit it too?

I think the point mezo was making is that, with sex, one (possibly) give it loads, yano, it is something that deserves a bitta sweat... but going up a hill is something people should be able to do without any hassle..

Then I quit. Then I got fat. Then I got small again.

All is ok.

Hah torakamikaze, the very idea of people smoking at work seems so backward now that we have a smoking ban, I can only imagine you smoking at work way back when, with mullets, and all the male employees grabbing the sectary's tush!
kissmeimshitfaced
kissmeimshitfaced on Dec 05 '07 at 12:45pm
It's possible mullets and sexist remarks really don't go in the same era, I've sort of just imagined an early metal head working a desk job in the 50's

Smoking controls your appetitus, so you don't chave to go to Cluckin' Bell as often as non-smokers.

I don't think I've ever worked anywhere where people could smoke. Even when I worked in a bar, it was during the time when smoking was outlawed in every indoor place that people might work in. Going out on the town is also heaps better now that smoking's been outlawed in bars, I don't come home smelling of smoke all over any more.

We were talking about it yesterday at work, on break; one of my workmates started when he was 13 and can't quit now (pretty reasonable) and another one started last year because all her friends all smoked out on the town and she thought it was more sociable.

I was outside with them smoking, I don't really care so much about that, but (a) I like to keep my lungs more or less intact and (b) I don't really want to be addicted to anything, no matter what it is.

They didn't really have much of an answer to (b), anyway. :-\

phyntosia

Oh, plus I don't give anyone the "stink-eye". Their problem, not mine. I wouldn't do it near a baby, though. One of my workmates smoked all through her pregnancy, god knows how many a day. I feel bad for her kid.

Another friend was pretty much born addicted to cigs as well since her mother had smoked all through her pregnancy, and started letting her smoke really young. That

I used to smoke and quite enjoyed it. Now that I've quit it bothers me to be around smoke for long periods of time. I don't mind hanging with friends that smoke I just can't have it in my home anymore.

All my friends have tried to quit at some point and only about 20% have been able to long term. You have to want to really quit to quit in my experience.

Oh and one of my friends just got caught smoking the first time, hardly surprising for most people my age to get caught, but this guy has managed to do it without his parents knowing for 4 years!

lol. I smoked for 7 years starting in high school and my parents still have no knowledge of it. Not that they would care at this point.

You Wisconsin daredevils, you.

In Ontario, smoking in the workplace has mostly been banned for 17 years, and there's been a total ban for a couple of years now.

When I was in high school, most of the kids who snuck out back for smokes were real losers. Additionally, my mom's always smoked. So for me, smoking as rebellion didn't appeal.

smoking is not good for you, but like other's have said. to each his own. I used to smoke and quit two years ago. now I run (5K... wooohooo!) exercise, etc. BUT I STILL DRINK, and that's not good for you either . But becuase I used to smoke, I have sympathy for smokers. There is a ban on smoking in restaurants and bars in Illinois that takes effect Jan. 1 (in case any of you smokers are coming here to visit Threadless and hang out at a bar after Jan. 1). I personaly don't think it's fair to not ban people from smoking in bars. There are plenty of places to go and drink that ban smoking. But EVERY bar? That's BS. It's not like tobacco is illegal. The state is making money off of you buying it but they won't let you use it in a bar?

Anyway, while I know the benefits of not smoking, to put so many restrictions on its use doesn't seem fair.

As for whether it's cool or not, I know a lot of losers who smoke. it's not the cigarette, it's who's behind it.

also, I love seeing old TV shows and movies with people smoking like chimneys.. God, they smoked like chimneys on "I Love Lucy". Rickey lit up, like, every two minutes....
ellabeeinc
ellabeeinc on Dec 05 '07 at 2:50pm
It's been ban here too. I must say that I enjoy being in restaurants without the smoke, even bars however, all the laws are scary - what's next? - I think bar owners should have the choice.

Yeah, old movies are great and old ads too. They would promote smoking as a way to expand the lungs and relax. It was medicinal! Go figure!

Either way, I'll always support freedom over rule. Plus, controversy gives us interesting subjects to think/chat about anyway.

All about me

I don't stay up late, I'm an early bird. I prefer the city over the suburbs and sugary sweet things rather than meat. I don't smoke, I sometimes drink too much and I'm a Virgo, born in the month of September. Married, no kids, my interests are in Art of course. I like lo-art rather than Hi-art and someday I hope that more people enjoy more contemporary art and less T.V.
