Threadless Select is a line of tees where an artist is invited to design a shirt, rather than submitting an idea. The Select line is a way to put well known designers side-by-side with up-and-comers.
Its where they let some so called renouned artist who is already making money independently design a shirt, thus hogging a spot. Then everyone buys it up in an effort to gain equal celebrity coolness, without regard to the actual design.
select shirts are really fun to look forward too because they are often things the majority of threadless voters wouldn't necessarily vote highly on so a lot of the selects seem like gems to me in an ocean of pun shirts. selects are generally more artsy/sometimes weird/sometimes 'pointless' conceptually some would say...
I think Selects are great, because you definitely see stuff that ordinarily wouldn't print. This design being a good example. Really cool, kind of mysterious, amazing colors, doesn't have an obvious concept or joke, and would most likely score low. Anyway, it exposes voters to different ideas and hopefully this in turn challenges them to maybe broaden their outlook. Of course I love many of the regular designs but I'm glad there's a place for something more experimental that's not based on votes for a change.
god this design sucks. i could give it a well thought out critique but i just got off of work and it's almost 3 am and i come home to see the new shirts for this week and damn this is shit. and everything is overpriced now. threadless you are making me dislike you very much.
do you honestly feel qualified to denounce the quality of the invited select designers though? these are people who are successful and respected in their field. maybe they know better than us.
Then everyone buys it up in an effort to gain equal celebrity coolness, without regard to the actual design.
Yeah, that's not a critique.
Is it so hard to believe that there are people who actually like the Selects? Is it really easier to believe that people shell out money in some sort of misguided attempt at starfucking? Even if you don't like the work, why do you have to be flip about the fact that these are legitimate artists and designers being commissioned?
If you'd like people to engage you politely I suggest you shy away from incendiary crap like that.
I love telling my friends that my t-shirts were designed by the likes of Wyeth Hansen, Tim Biskup and HORT. The celebrity coolness that dropping names like that brings is awesome.
i wear mine to all my red carpet premieres... then women are totally all over me and junk.... and like Star magazine will say things like "Torakamikaze is addicted to meth!"... but Ill deny it, even though I put meth in my corn flakes... but whatever, have you ever tried meth flakes? Yeah... maybe you wouldnt be so quick to judge then PAPARAZZI. Sheesh... I mean, cant a guy go to Sizzler without being bombarded by cameras and over-obsessed unwed teenage mother fans clawing at your heels... trying to tear off your dungaress for the next great crotch shot? I'm sorry that I look so good... but it's the life I chose.
d3d: Please reread what I wrote. I made no mention of this weeks select print. Moreover I did not bash any designer, unlike you. I, like everyone else on this site with an opinion, am qualified to say whatever I want about a particular design or feature of this site. My original post is just a reflection of what I see happening. Because IMO, the majority of the Select tees are not at the same level as the majority of tees printed by threadless designers. While I am sure that is not a problem for most people, I personally see it as a major flaw and a nuisance. That does not mean that the Select line doesn't help booster sales or inspire people. I just know that I would feel really crappy if my design got printed after all my time and effort and then it gets stuck next to some design that made mine look bad. I say that if you hire a pro, they should give you professional results. Not something the average person could do with little effort. That applies to art or anything else in life.
tiphaine: Why would I care if someone likes a Select print and wants to buy it? I only feel that it is laughable how some people seem to just blindly fork over their money like they are bidding on the holy grail. Again, I have opinions. This is why we have a scoring system from 0 to 5, it's not 0 or 5. All comments good, neutral, or bad serve a purpose. If everyone was "polite" and only gave happy fun "crazy awesome $$555" comments then this place would be overrun with junk designs. And if it is the case that you prefer quantity over quality then you should probably just buy all your clothes from CP.
Why would I care if someone likes a Select print and wants to buy it?
That's a pretty good question. Why do you care so much? Whatever happened to "live and let live"?
Pretty much nothing in the portion of the screed you addressed to me has any relation to what I posted. I don't even know what CP is and I'm not sure why you wish to accomplish by maligning my fashion sense.
Frankly, until you show an interest in (a) reading comprehension and (b) the magic of paragraph breaks, I'm done here.

you also have assumptions. what basis do you have for saying people blindly buy select designs? just because you might absolutely despise a design, doesn't mean someone else genuinely likes it, and vice versa...
That's a pretty good question. Why do you care so much?
Please refer to my last post where I clearly state that I don't care, I find it laughable.
Whatever happened to "live and let live"?
I believe I already covered this. Since you seem to have missed that whole part I suppose I will expand and explain to you why comments of all types are necessary.
Good Comments: provide encouragement, let the designer know they are doing a good job, and should continue for the
betterment of society
Indifferent/Neutral Comments: let the designer know that you appreciate the effort but here are the areas in which they should seek for improvement.
Negative Comments: Says, "Look, we here at threadless have a standard that we need to uphold. Now you need to either get with the program and get some skill, or gtfo."
Pretty much nothing in the portion of the screed you addressed to me has any relation to what I posted.
False. But again for my amusement I will spell it out for you.
Is it so hard to believe that there are people who actually like the Selects?
No, "I only feel that it is laughable how some people seem to just blindly fork over their money like they are bidding on the holy grail."
Is it really easier to believe that people shell out money in some sort of misguided attempt at starfucking?
Yes I do believe that. For the majority of younger folk, image is everything.
Even if you don't like the work, why do you have to be flip about the fact that these are legitimate artists and designers
being commissioned?
I know they are legit, I said that in my first sentence of this blog. But who decides what "artist" gets invited? Certainly I have no say. Oh well, at least I can complain about it.
I don't even know what CP is and I'm not sure why you wish to accomplish by maligning my fashion sense.
You know what CP is. I said nothing about how you dress, I don't know.
Frankly, until you show an interest in (a) reading comprehension and (b) the magic of paragraph breaks, I'm done here.
Sorry I'm not used to posting in html. Threadless needs VBull. In the meantime I will continue to be above personal attacks.
