Hi Everyone,

I've recently submitted a piece that I felt very strongly about but it was rejected by threadless as they cited 'copyrighted material' as the reason of rejection, and while I understand that and respect it, I have also seen many pop-culture inspired designs get approved and even get printed (star-wars, super-mario..etc come to mind) so I'm not sure what exactly went wrong here.

This is the design I'm talking about:

Idol

I feel very strongly about it especially since i've yet to get printed here on threadless, so is there any way for me to work this out and get it to the voting process without it losing it's essence and over-all value.

The piece has got some amazing response and all the platforms it was previewed on including Deviant-art and Tumblr:

So yeah, your feedback would certainly help.

My guess would be that the Mickey face on the TV looks like an exact copy of original Disney art. The material that is accepted that uses pop culture material is parody that uses the artist's version of the artwork. Not saying that you didn't draw that yourself, just that it looks exactly like the original and that could get sticky in court.

I really like it, but those circles are copyrighted-so that's a no-no as far as Threadless are concerned (and anybody who wants to be legal).

You could try the less scrupulous sites....or maybe just change Mick up a bit esp. ears and the rounded shapes as the three circles are a little bit too famous to be taking on....

hoped that helped......really like it btw!

I just noticed this design with 'the muppets' that got approved and printed here on threadless:

muppets tshirt

I just need to understand the difference between this one and mine.

maybe they changed the face a bit as it looks a bit more cartoony, also it's quite vague-so it could just be a woman....

but yeah I did think that one was a bit close for comfort

Namco has got a bit miffed at T'less before and some tees were taken off the site, also a famous Glennz design called Dark side of the garden was taken down (vader cutting a hedge in the shape of the death star).

Nintendo seems to be fair game for some random reason (maybe they like the promotion).

Yes, "Perfect Geometry" was for a Phineas and Ferb contest. As for the Princess Leia one, it is obviously her but done in a specific style and way as to not be a perfect replica. Your Mickey Mouse is not far removed enough. Your idea, however, is brilliant, so you need to fix this so you can sub it!

I'll see if I can stylize 'mickey' a bit so that I can re-submit it. Would be a shame for it to go to waste.

parody/copyright issues are a hit or miss, generally dependent on how anal the company is about its icons

you do good work :)

stop looking for excuses not to change your art if you want it to print here. Disney is one of the toughest companys when it comes to copywrite violation

yeah I have to agree with the other comments too. just edit the mouse and logos to resemble anything but mickey mouse. May I suggest you change the theme to a scary one like the mice watching a cat/s or something. Or it can still be funny if the heroine of the movie is another mice pawning a cat!

Nah, I don't feel like I can change it to resemble anything other than someone they would look up-to and mickey is a perfect fit here, it's okay, I'll just keep this one for myself, got plenty of other stuff I can submit here on threadless in hopes to get printed one day. :)
