not this, but, if I were to do a watercolor sub Im just trying to figure out how to make it look good on the shirt. biggest issue would be the texture of the paper, I can't exactly get rid of it.

I could try to work on clay board or something, but its not what Im used to working on, so it would look pretty different i think.

any suggestions?

yeah they do but its the same thing as working on bristol or clay board it changes how the paint adheres to the paper, and therefor alters the way you have to use it. I would have to change the way I approach the painting, I would also need to buy that kind of paper.. lol.

you always look so somber ;^(

I just get really fine textured paper and then photoshop the shit out of it, for erm...lack of a better term.

thats not true malcolm, sometimes I look awful, the rest, I look somber.. lol

yeah, If I try this method, I think thats probably the only solution. paper with less tooth. I guess I was hoping for some kind of miracle solution.

hey there
I tried googling this, because I love watercolor myself and I am interested in doing subs with it...
I found this blog...
the blogger says "I share the frustration of scanning watercolors with less than desired results. One thing I've noticed that affects results is the angle of the paper on the scanner. This image shows the difference between scanning at a horizontal angle and a verticle angle. The first image has the grain parallel to the fluorescent bulb itself, and perpendicular to the path of the bulb. (Click to enlarge and see the difference.)

I think this is the trick with photographing art as well; to set up lighting so that no shadows, at least unflaterring ones, are created."

here is the image he's talking about... with the bad scan on the left, the good on the right
hope this helps?

yeah but there is still a grain that just wouldnt show up right on a shirt.

Im going to try to paint on hot press type of paper and see what happens. Ive had some success with it before, just haven't worked with it in a long time. we will see..

thanks for posting those links.

If you scan the paper before you paint on it so you have a copy of the texture itself, is there a way to combine it with the finished painting that will cancel out all the same bits? (By inverting one layer or something?)

well the pattern on the paper is random squatter, well at least on arches paper it is.. so it would be nearly impossible to line up. but its an interesting idea.. im not sure how it would work once the paint was on the paper if the pattern wasnt random.

but nice use of your brain.

Yeah, it'll be in a slightly different place in the scanner so even a pixel out of line or subtle variations in the light in the scanner or whatever are going to make the image different each time so it probably wouldn't work.

1. If the painting doesn't take TOO long, maybe experiment on different kinds of paper. Try marker paper... it takes a while to dry, but won't have ANY texture in it when you're done.

2. Did you try a despeckle filter in Photoshop? Did anything happen?
