I'm thinking of trying out knitting as a hobby. Do you think it's too feminine? I watched my aunt do it for 3 hours one day, and it looks to be the right combination of frustration and relaxation for me to waste my time on. Sort of like a simple computer game, but with a tangible end product. I once saw a "Knitting Man(ual)" book in Halifax to teach knitting specifically to men. I wonder if it's still there...
I think I'll take some photos of me in my Threadless gear tomorrow, that way I can both save money on my upcoming purchases whilst looking fly in my spiffy duds. Be prepared. And scared.

I taught myself. It's not too difficult, I think; you just need to know how to knit and purl for starters. I've never bothered learning to read patterns, though.

If you think knitting could be hard to start with (I think it's pretty hard..) you could try crocheting, which many people think is easier to do at first... I taught myself from the stitch n' bitch crochet books which I really recommend (awfully feminine though :P) Knitting and crocheting can be an expensive hobby if you get into cool yarns and suddenly you've got all this stuff you're trying to give away

I've hand knitted and machine knitted; it can be addictive if you have time to do it. Crochet can be more interesting depending on what you want to make. No, it's not too feminine, do what you want to do.

knitting lets you carry leathal weapons while giving you the sensitive edge of a craftster

I loom-knit which is another way to get into it. It's easy to get started but then you can learn more complicated stitches to keep it interesting. I find it very very relaxing.

and ditto to MCS ... I don't even want to add up how much I've spent on yarn since I started going to a knitting group at a fancy store ... soooo addicting!
