i really didnt want to bring it into threadless but i just saw a news station announce that gay marriages are allowed in california. i mean i join that celebration because i feel it is a big issue with civil equality with the world today.

i feel like the whole issue with prejudice against the gay community is exactly the same as the racial prejudice towards the african americans back in the 18/1900's. (i am not comparing the two together, just stating the fact that both instances are in similar events) Both groups have been condemned from society, harassed and abused. long time ago, it was racism with color and race, today the fight against sexual orientation.

and the issue with religion and sexual orientation; clearly not everyone is of the same religion and follow the same beliefs, why force your opinion on others? i dont understand why religion always has to be involved with the gay community.

why cant people see equality?

(just voicing an opinion)deleted

yeah opinions are just that. our government/laws were founded on religious beliefs, even though church and state are "separate"... meh.
skeev
skeev on Jun 17 '08 at 2:24pm
People used to use religion to say that blacks were not equal to whites as well.

It's pretty scary that people are still willing to discriminate so harshly and openly against other cultures.
bobgreen13
bobgreen13 on Jun 17 '08 at 2:26pm
haha martiandrivein, true government was based on religion, but not everyone follows on religion beliefs, which is kind of contradictory figuring everyone follows the laws regardless of religion

and church and state "try" to be separate, really though...their not

I find it hard to discriminate against anyone because I've had my fair share of slurs yelled my way.

bobgreen13 on Jun 17 '08 at 2:27pm
skeev is correct...and look how that turned out
does this mean the gay community will share the same fate?

I'm fuckin' stoked. My home state of Connecticut's legalized civil unions and I know within the next decade we'll get full marriage rights. Currently in Massachusetts, and I'm thinking of hanging here for a while, but it'd be nice to be able to get married and have my marriage recognized if I end up settling down in CT.

can a man and a man conceive a baby?? (can they raise one ..sure.)

the point is there are some very fundamental (maybe only 1 main one perhaps even?) differences between the union of Man / Man (or Lady / Lady) and the union of a Man and a Woman.

I personally think that a solution that might defuse the situation (while neither side might be "thrilled" hopefully everyone could deal..

is create a new legal entity (name at least) that more or less grants the same legal rights/responsibilities ..etc as Marriage for Gays but under a different name.

meh... whatever...

martiandrivein on Jun 17 '08 at 2:30pm
yeah... it's just aggravating that people are so ignorant. They quote scripture to say it's wrong, but they are looking past the scripture that says only God shall judge. I feel like every blog is religious today.

california is known for leading the rest of america through civil breakthroughs in the past, maybe they can start spreading to the far states on the east, who knows?

In the UK you can have a "civil partnership" which I think gives you the same rights as a civil wedding. It seems wrong to me that a couple can live together for 20 or 30 years and not have the same rights as a married couple. Equal rights are good.

The thing about the US is the whole "in god we trust". If Christian fundamentalist see homosexulaity as wrong, it's hard for them to accept that everyone deserves the same rights.

God should have nothing to do with law and justice.

oh fucking har har... I realized that some clown might make that comparison but I strongly disagree that it would be the same as the previous "separate but equal" deal

The separation between church and state came to par because our forefather's did not want laws to corrupt their religion. Oh, how those tables hath turned.

Being married really does not have anything to do having babies. There are millions of babies born out of wedlock each year, and also millions of married couples who will never have children.

Being married is about making a commitment to that special someone (be they the same sex or different) and making your family (be that two people or twenty).
mezo
   mezo on Jun 17 '08 at 2:42pm
Actually, in the US...being married means tax bonuses and getting medical insurance.

My husband friend who has Cystic Fibrosis is not legally allowed to marry and be on a spousal insurance because his disease is terminal.

deboraborialis
deboraborialis on Jun 17 '08 at 2:51pm
No tax bonuses for us. Fuckers! Few people have medical insurance here either, since we have the National Health Service. You need to be married to get your other half's pension and also so they can make decisions on your behalf if you become ill. I want my boyfriend to able to switch off my ventilator and me his. Who said romance is dead.

sonmi
   sonmi on Jun 17 '08 at 2:51pm
indeed

i mean, why do people care? they talk about protecting the sanctity of marriage, but so many hetero couples get divorced, and get to marry at a whim. i mean, freaking las vegas.

personally I don't care shirt...fyi

I could give a flying fuck

but lot's of people seem to ...so calling it a different thing while granting the legal rights to gays they have been previously missing out on seems like a nice get everyone to shut up solution to me.
shirtflirt

but people have to learn to care about other peoples affairs enough so that they start legislature against them and/or for new forms of existing liberties.

it should be all or nothing. just my opinion.

I don't think it matters what it's called, as long as at the end of the day everyong has the same rights and benefits.
Melikochan
Melikochan on Jun 17 '08 at 2:55pm
Honestly, the rights awarded to a marriage mean more to me than the idea of marriage itself, so I'd be willing to settle for "separate but equal" until this country starts to accept the idea of gay marriage.

Actually, to edit that, I'd be perfectly happy with all of the rights under a different name despite what the future would bring after the fact. I can still CALL it a marriage even if the legal term is different.

it's kinda odd that the media (tv especially) LOVES gay men.

Tv can't get enough of gay men- they're the catty, scathing guys on sitcoms, they dress the undressable on reality tv, they present our best game shows.....but

but lesbians are extremely rare and usually just there for titilation. tv needs more lesbians.
maddingo
maddingo on Jun 17 '08 at 2:58pm
porn has lots of lesbians....oh wait or so I have been told (although they may not be "real" lesbians)???
deboraborialis
deboraborialis on Jun 17 '08 at 2:59pm
I agree with you mel.

I've been with my boyfriend for 18 years, but never seen the need to get married since we are both none religious. We have less rights that people who have been together for a year, but who are married. We are together, as a family unit, and it would take something huge to split us up. It seems strange to me that i need a bit of paper, but it seems I do. Maybe wait until out 20th aniversary. Don't want to rush things.
