I totally think you're right. I never even considered the rhino was trying to impress the 'pretty girl unicorn' in the poster. Actually, I happen to think the unicorn is pretty macho/studly looking & always figured the rhino was trying to look more like that (although i also suppose it could be a homosexual rhino, right?)

I think it's the first one, too. That's what I always thought anyways. But the second idea is kind of cute too. :)



Disgusting fact: I decided to wear this shirt to a friend's house one day to chill with him and my boyfriend. When I got there, I took off my coat and my boyfriend said, "Damn you!" Then he unzipped his jacket and he had the same shirt on.



We looked like on of those couples the rest of the night.

If all unicorns are female, who's to say that that rhino isn't also female? IT can still be the same interpretation - that the rhino is trying to look like the unicorn.



Though, to be honest, my first thought was that the rhino had a crush on the unicorn and wanted to look better to woo it. Either way works for me though.

I think you're right. From what I've read, it is theorized that the mythology of unicorns derived from foreigners who saw rhinos for the first time and when they tried to describe the rhino, their descriptions evoked an image similar to that of a unicorn instead.



So... I think that the rhino is working out so he/or she can look like the slimmer unicorn people once expected. You know, like how women try to lose weight to look like the myth of Kate Moss.

i thought the ambiguity was intentional all along.



my first thought was that he wanted to look like the unicorn, then that he wanted to sleep with the unicorn, then i couldn't decide between them, then i thought the presence of dueling interpretations, both of which were funny and fun, was the very best feature of the shirt. then i tried to buy it, and saw that men's small was sold out already (as usual). but i only wanted to buy it *after* i realized it could be both.



anyway, i'm quite surprised that wasn't the intent of the designer, but that's ok too i guess. that actually might make it even more interesting...

and just to mix things up some more, here's a fun spin: as a gay guy, there are plenty of people out there that i want to look like AND want to sleep with. so the normal total separation between those two categories that exists for straight people, doesn't exist for that much smaller group of people, teh gays.



AND, when i looked at the design, i took on the mentality of straight people, because i assumed the design was produced in that larger culture and not in my smaller subculture. so i assumed that the meaning of the shirt would be either one or the other, when for me personally the obvious choice would have been "duh, both!"



all this makes me want the shirt even more, but alas, sold out.

I like the "Both" interpretation. Thats a third spin on the story of the rhino/ unicorn.



I bought 2 of these shirts in the sale bc i love it so much and i wanted one larger for the gym & 1 smaller to wear normally.... this is the first shirt i've ever purchased 2 of !
