The gorgons were three disgusting daughters of Phorcys and Ceto; sisters of the Graea. They had snakes for hair, and hands and teeth of bronze, but bodies of women. The two immortals were Euryale and Stheno. Medusa was the only mortal and was slain by Perseus.

A lot of representations of Medusa are as a hot chick with snakes for hair, but the myths clearly show gorgons as hideous in every way.

The argument that somebody who isn't skilled as an artist is necessarily a bad critic is terribly weak. I'm not a beautiful woman, but I, and most people that I know, can certainly tell the difference between a beautiful woman and one who is ugly.

I don't understand what's good about this. Can somebody explain it to me?

moose -

a: it took incredible talent, things like this do not just happen, composition, execution, color usage, the list goes on and on

b: This shirt is in your face - fucking rad - neon bowling badassness with gore on top.

c: If you wear this shirt out it will give you a +20 hit points

d: In person, you would agree with me, right now you are letting your sensibilities get in the way
MooseDinner
MooseDinner on Sep 12 '07 at 1:47pm
a. I agree completely. It's obviously very well done and took time and talent

b. Agreed.

c. Maybe +15 hit points.

d. Sensibilities? I'm asking what's good about the shirt.
ISABOA

well considering your responses to a,b and c - I would say you have your d answer, yes?

I don't think something that's well executed necessarily makes for a good shirt or design. Or something that is in your face or exciting. It's not my style at all, but even aside from that, I find it hard to appreciate.

The composition works well to utilize the unique shape of a shirt, the soft shading style employed helps make the ink look light and flexible, instead of stiff, on the shirt. The colors, while unorthadox, are eye catching (good or bad, this is part of the point of a designer -not blank- tee, to catch an onlookers eye). It also has a great story behind it, passed down through the ages, so in turn it lends itself to familiarity, which is often comforting, even if the story is one of myth and violent legend. I could go on, but I run the risk of having a violent eyegasm just thinking about the imagery.
Ste7en
   Ste7en on Sep 12 '07 at 3:06pm
...and also, it doesnt say "no fear" on it...so huge bonus points for that
MooseDinner
MooseDinner on Sep 12 '07 at 3:41pm
In what way does the composition utilize the shape of the shirt?
I don't think threadless shirts usually look stiff on the shirt. They're not made of puff paint.
Agreed on the last two points about color and the story.
Thanks for the responses ISABOA and Ste7en.

It utilizes a strong base and narrow top, cosely mirroring the human anatomy (head and torso), while also creating visual allusions to ties or necklaces with the creative placement of the hand, just under the collar

The lines created by the purple energy splashes also conform to the way shoulders and hips shift together, and the indentation between them forms a hourglass shape, which is aesthetically pleasing due to the way it closely mimics the female form

eh im not a fan either. the concept is neat.. with the perseus and what not, but to me it resembles many of the shirts my 11 year old brother owns that my mom picked up for him at target

Ste7en
   Ste7en on Sep 13 '07 at 12:35am
Wow, it looks nothing like those. Great examples of exactly what it doesn't look like. Second, there isnt even a skull on this shirt, just pieces of the gorgon's skull showing.

Wow I totally didn't know there was a whole backstory to this shirt, nor did I notice the hand. While I'd never in a million years wear this, I certainly admired the amount of skill that went into this shirt and do more so now that I know what it's actually of, lol. The color usage is incredible. I can see how, at a glance, it can give that "No Fear" look, largely due to the almost neonish quality of the shirt and the fact that the gorgon's head looks somewhat like a skull, but any amount of scrutiny would put any superfical comparison to rest I should think.

I agree, those shirts are nothing like Medusa. Though I can see his point. Skulls are waaaay overdone. So much so that their becoming just another lame fad. Most of the time when I see a skull submission I'm like AUUGGH 0! but there are special ones out there. For instance this one. Theres something special about it. I like it.
