It's called using references, nilrach. Maybe you would be more familiar with this practice if you were a designer.

sorry i haven't design any tee shirt yet.

maybe i should find something that most Americans have never seen, put it on a tee, and call it my own design.

that's not designing, olie

I'm not attacking you.
I'm simply saying that what you are inferring he did is steal these images and say he drew them, which is not what he did. Unless the image he "stole" is another one you didn't link to, I'm guessing he hand-drew everything himself. Yes they are similar because it is probably a traditional Thai posture or something (I'm not that knowledgeable of Thai art, forgive me) and I don't even know if he ever even saw these images, but if he did there is nothing wrong with using other images with a style/pose that you need as a reference point for your own art. It's a common practice in the art world, and he still made his own original piece.

nilrach, the whole point of the shirt is the arrow sticking out the wearer's back. The front may be an old image but that's just the set up, the punchline is all Feishu's.

That's designing, nilrach.

Besides, Feishu still drew the front image. It is as much his as any artist who has drawn a Santa Clause in a red suit with white fur trim. Some other artist long ago created that traditional look but it doesn't mean that anyone who draws a Santa with the same suit now is ripping him off.

Your argument is way off the mark. You might as well say that Afternoon Delight is a ripoff of old drawings of unicorns.

True, edg. But I understand what nilrach is saying though. Afternoon Delight uses the idea of the design as a selling point, where Watch your back uses the detailed design of that Thai character as a selling point more or less. I didn't catch on to the arrow until i really paid attention to the shirt.

Hey, welcome to Threadless, Paul!

fueledbyrice aka paul is 21.43 years old, has been a member since March 22, 2008, has scored 0 submissions, giving an average score of 0.00.

I understand what you're saying but I first saw this design as a submission and if you look at that page you will see the joke (the arrow) very clearly.
http://www.threadless.com/submission/136720/Watch_Out_Your_Back

Every element in a design is a selling point, even the color of the shirt it sits on, but I still think in this case the arrow is by far the major factor in whether or not people will buy it. My hunch is that if the arrow weren't there this would have scored much lower and would have never been printed anyway. Check the comments on the submission page and decide for yourself.

I think this would have sold more shirts without the arrow, you have a highly detailed traditional THAI drawing and then a extremely simple arrow is quickly added on the back. My hunch is WITHOUT the arrow this shirt would have scored much lower and never been printed anyway.
