Why is it that 90 % of all products that wins are cute/funny/childish?

I've seen some pretty neat serious, abstract or darker designs, that have super quality, but they always get beaten by some tees with a "haha sweet! It,s a Bear with a hat! Must have" print on them...

Come on, didn't you see how fast a shirt like "I Love Tokyo" got sold out? It wasent funny, it was very talented...

Join me on my crusade!

Vote zero (Or at least a low score god dammit!) on the cute/funny/childish stuff, and give somebody with a different design a chance!

(Oh yea.. Get mad all of you, let me feed on your anger!!!!)

iPear on Dec 04 '07 at 3:54pm
I mean, I don't care for most funny/cute shirts but even if I don't think I'm gonna wear it, it doesn't mean it should be 0'd, especially if it's a decent design.

I think they do a pretty good job at putting out a good variety of cute/clever/arty/conceptual/beautiful/funny designs each week. There is always at least one tee I want to buy each week, and that's a lot compared to regular stores. I don't think there's anything to complain about.
fatheed
   fatheed on Dec 04 '07 at 3:59pm
Pardon my tourettes. I was just trying to inject some anger. Like them or not, there is a market for the cute ones. Just get here on time to get the ones you want. Everyone happy!

While I would love Threadless to print more daring stuff, I think there's room for a variety of work to fit the variety of the public. I try to vote what I think is appropriate in most situations.

fatheed
   fatheed on Dec 04 '07 at 4:01pm
You shouldn't, in theory have to zero any design that gets past Ross and Craig. Unless you find out it's copied or something, or you have a deep moral or ethical objection to it. At least recognise the time someone has put into it - even it it does suck hard.

That's so weird, cause I was doing one where a fairy princess and a panda were meeting for brunch, sipping unicorn giggles as they watched the sun set over a rainbow colored scene. And on the back they're hugging.

Im just very tired of artist like this guy

http://www.threadless.com/submission/141356/bolt/showmore,designs

Who never gets shit printed, even though much of it rules!

Know that the bolt is done alot, but the colour, and the "things" inside it are very detailed, but it gets only a 1.90.. BAH!

Fuck all those businesses that sell things that people buy. They should all sell things that I want, like orange juice and comfortable shoes.
SoulfumeInc
SoulfumeInc on Dec 04 '07 at 4:35pm
i completely agree.

im not gonna go around giving zeros to those other designs, but I have to say a lot of sweet designs get passed up for an octopus carrying a teddy bear through a dark forest with other random silly monsters watching....just an example.

I completely agree though.
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Dec 04 '07 at 4:41pm
1. Cute tees tend to sell very well, so while you may not like them, there's obviously plenty of other people who do. After all, Threadless is a business and they want to cater to different tastes.

2. If a design scores low, it's (usually) an indication that it's not as popular amongst the community. So there's no point moaning that designs you think are nice don't get printed, because obviously not many people agree with you.

3. Just buy the ones that appeal to you and don't buy the ones that you don't like - it's not difficult. Even if ALL the shirts printed every week were to your taste it's not likely that you would buy the lot, anyway.

...but threadless doesnt just cater to artsy community...it's a place where you can get sweet shirts for you and your mom

so far i've got shirts for just about everyone in my family, which is an age group from 14 to 55

the first shirt i bought was communist party but i quickly switched to the more interesting designy, less joke based shirts

sometimes the cuteness can get overwhelming, but i look at is as a way of keeping me from spending more money than i should on tshirts

-k.

THREADLESS IS A BUSINESS FIRST AND FOREMOST.

It doesn't have to have cool contests, or give out stuff to its customers just because they love us.

I get what you're saying, but think about it.

You couldn't complain to any other store, you just wouldn't shop there.

I agree about the cutesy designs, but hey, people say they'll buy them, and they do.

Exactly. So even if we all voted zeros on every cute design, Threadless still has the final say so on whether it gets printed or not.

While I find the anecdotal evidence presented by a guy who owns "Bleeding Heart" quite compelling, you only have to look at the main page to see there's not much cute on Threadless at all. There's a giant bunny, a baby batman, a baby bird in your pocket, a ghoul with an ice cream and some penguins all sharing space next to a punk cock, a grotty hotel room, a scary forest, a black spot and whatever scary stuff is going on in The Raven's Cry. And in between them, there's a bunch of tees about music and seafaring. So I'm sorry, but I feel the Threadless catalogue is very diverse and should remain that way. If you don't like cute, don't buy it.

I own, give, and enjoy a healthy mix of amusing, infantile, and artsy shirts.

I like that Threadless has a healthy mix of amusing, infantile, and artsy shirts for sale.

The fact that Threadless sells very few shit shirts on their site suggests to me that they are already aware of what is scoring well and what their diverse customer base enjoys.
