i need music suggestions. i like lots of different types of music, but right now i'm looking for music that sounds like:

bauhaus
joy division
interpol
blonde redhead
franz ferdinand
the raveonettes
misfits
arcade fire (funeral)

if you're not familiar with any of these bands, that's cool, here are some other vague guidelines:

1. no whiny vocals. (yeah, i know arcade fire is sorta like that, but i got used to it)

2. sharp, wiry, jangly, or angular guitar sound.

3. it should have enough noise going on that i can't hear people shouting into their cellphones over my headphones. thanks in advance.

my ultimate quest is to find a modern band that sounds like bauhaus, but different.

Were you looking for older Joy Division (more punk) or their post-punk sound from Unknown Pleasures and Closer? If you want the more punk sound, try listening to David Bowie's early records or Gang of Four. If not, maybe try Siouxsie and the Banshees' later albums? Early New Order? "Ceremony" is a really great song by them, it was actually a Joy Division song int he first place.

thanks mad cat...

blossompossum : excellent suggestions, already familiar with those bands though, i love siouxsie & the banshees and 'ceremony' is a great song (i like both versions) what i'm looking for are people who have maybe followed in those footsteps without being mere copycats...thanks for the response though, nice to see someone knows those bands!

well, no, i'm not looking for old bands, necessarily. don't care when it came out, as long as it's good. if anything, though, i'd actually prefer newer bands who are doing similar music to the older ones, does that make sense?

what are you listening to now?

If you like Interpol, then you'll probably dig She Wants Revenge.

valorandvellum, those first 2 suggestions were pretty much spot on, just the type of guitar sound i'm looking for, thanks a ton.

You have supreme taste in music mister.
Maybe try The Jesus and Mary Chain as someone above recommended and also Howling Bells - they have a real 'Raveonettes' feel to them.

Also check out: Dappled Cities Fly, Band of Horses, LCD Soundsystem and The Klaxons

ashley-jane : yeah a little, been listening to 'she wants revenge' suggested by valorandvellum & neon electric, thanks to valorandvellum for providing what i guess is an entire album, by the way...i like some of it, the guitar sound is perfect. the guy's voice sounds really really familiar too. anyway i'm sorta picky though i guess.

neon electric : thank you. there's so much more i listen to i haven't listed here...i nearly worshipped the jesus and mary chain in my youth, psychocandy is one of the best albums ever made. just listened to the 4 demo tracks off the latest raveonettes album on their myspace (no i don't really like myspace) and i'll definitely have to pick up the cd if i have any money left this month.

thanks for the suggestions i'll finally have time to check them out this weekend...

All about me

i was grown in a vat in a secret underground laboratory off the coast of the aleutian islands. my favorite word is antediluvian. i even know what it means. i like the idea of grim jocularity, if not the reality. i invented the portable sumo wrestler. i once went through a cellar door to get an amish terrarium. i can't draw. but i still do.
