Something I'm contemplating: deleting my twitter account. It feels like a burden. I can't seem to sqeeze anything useful in 140 characters and tweeting doesn't feel like proper communication to me, more like using a megaphone on an overcrowded marketsquare (where eveyone is using one already). Overall, I'm not really enjoying it.

Has anyone here ever nixed one of their social networking tools and happily so? (or regretfully so?)
Abandoning your myspace page to the eerie desert internet winds doesn't quite count, tho.

I hate social networking sites, but have come to the conclusion that you sort of have to be on them if don't want to miss out on things like parties and whatnot. When my brother got engaged a few months ago, I read about on facebook before I actually talked to him personally and that's pretty ridiculous.

I've deleted my facebook account a couple times and I erased all my tweets once. Now, I rarely post anything on facebook and my tweets are rare and usually irrelevant.

My twitter is more of an illustrators blah account, not for keeping up with friends. So the party stuff is not really reason to keep it.

Twitter has a higher 'hump' to get over if you're going to enjoy it and use it a lot. So I would agree that you could lose that one, between the two.

i've considered this many times. i'm sure i'd be happy without all those accounts, just haven't had the guts to delete. but i've never done the twitter thing, it seemed pointless.

I've not abandoned my Facebook profile for the reason of parties and shows too, which is one of the only purpose Facebook serves me.

i'll never understand twitter as anything than a constant plee to get people to pay attention to an individual. seems so desparate. however, when there was a flash overcrowding for a last second concert in la i thought, 'wow, that's cool that's what twitter should be used for"

needless to say i don't have a tweeter thing
i have facebook and it's a great way to learn about other small farms as i try to evolve our lifestyle into more of a homestead.

haha indeed Twitter's pointless if you don't want to use it. It's like any tool that way - I'm more of a follower than a tweeter in any case.

But yeah, I applaud your abstaining from facebook!

I've found both tremendously useful as a limited utility, good for only certain things. I think that's why I still enjoy both...

I was on facebook for like a week.
But I felt like I had to entertain people constantly.
And I soon realized that I really don't give a crap about what your dog is wearing or what funny face little Timmy made or what Obama said. I just don't care. It's just not important to me. If it's truly important I will find out the old fashioned way.
But mostly, I don't want people all up in my biz. Some people can be kinda stalker-ish.

I've found Twitter to be really useful for certain work related things though. One example would be stock trading. A stock starts to break out, boom, i know about it.

twitter is like my news. facebook is my stand up comedy testing ground.

Yup - Chad's right - the speed of breaking news on twitter is incredibly useful, depending on what fields of information you are interested in...

There are a very few twitter accounts that I find really useful.
The @bbc4 one, for instance, or one that collects all the best/hottest science articles and tweeted about those.

But I can go to their sites as well if I want to...

I don't care that much about twitter, but I really do enjoy facebook. Tumblr is also addicting sometimes.

I could see tumblr rising to household status like facebook and twitter have. I don't think it's there - I mean, I don't think I recognize their logo yet, among other things.

I never fully understood Twitter until the quakes hit Christchurch... It's been an indispensible way of sharing news, info, opinions and general cheerfulness to a bunch of people all in the same boat, even if you don't follow each other... It's all done via the #eqnz hashtag. It's been really good... People even guess how big the latest aftershock was in the 15 minute wait time before the official magnitude is released by geonet.

But yeah, that's a fairly exclusive example, but I still really like it for finding other cool artists and creatives and seeing what they are up to. It's just nice having conversations with people you would never be able to otherwise.

See, I only really connect with people that I know of Facebook. I use other things like G+, Twitter and Tumblr for arty/photo/random funny stuff. I don't feel like annoying my real friends on facebook with "Hey, buy my photo print here" posts, though they do occasionally sneak in there once in a while.

obviously they aren't a necessity, but as with any other networking tool you'll get more out of it the more you put into it.

GD, that reminds me of this example used in Fast Food Nation when a town gets completely snowed in, shut off from the rest of the world. the usual commercial radio station was used as a beacon of information delivery and coordination of necessary supplies like water and food to people who were in need. technology is awesome, when there is a necessary and larger functioning role other than recreational trading of dong jpegs.

Oh, no worries shirt :)

I really don't like listening to the radio during the quakes, so many terrified people call up in hysterics and it's exhausting to listen through to get proper info... at least on twitter, people who are freaking out can't go into too much detail.

Why delete it? Its just one more thing on the internet that links to something you do use or to your portfolio. Just leave it be and walk away.

^You've a point. That's basically what I'm going to do. Delete stuff, stop participating, leave account in limbo.
Or have it filled with auto-tweets from my tumblr and ignore it.

Twitter is an invaluable way of getting an impression of what people are thinking very quickly. I got an account recently only because you can't search trends without one now, apparently. I don't follow or have followers or tweet anything. I can learn anything from whether my Netflix issues are specific to my household to HOLY CRAP WAS THAT REALLY AN EARTHQUAKE?

Plus all the Arab Spring and uprising shit. Twitter is such a powerful way to disseminate information. I take it seriously now. I was just thinking today that people snubbing FB and Twitter are pretty much like people who once upon a time snubbed computers in general, or learning Microsoft Word or something.

Kookaberry - That's probably the best bit of twitter. You read "Putin" and "Москва" in the trending topics, and think: wait, what? And within secons you know people are protesting against Putin in Moscow.

But you don't need to actively participate in twitter to get that.

I do get a bit irked when people who learn I don't have a facebook account assume I'm out of internet touch, by the way.
(Especially when I learn they haven't properly set up their router and I hack my way into it and change their SSID. They quickly change their tune after that.)

Though you probably didn't mean it so specifically adressed to me, more like a general thought.
