Hey awesome folks,

Some friends and I have been throwing this idea around for a while now, and it looks like it's now nearing the possiblity of it actually happening.
The idea is to go to the USA for about 3 months. Either rent a RV and sleep in there, or rent a van to get around and sleep on campings/ in hotels/motels/whatever.

The thing is, we have no idea what the costs of living are in America.
How much do you Americans pay for decent food in the supermarket? How about decent restaurants?
How about motels and such?
What about beer? And beer in bars?

Anything in particular we need to take in account?
Stuff we should absolutely do, stuff we should most definitely avoid?

Thanks!

The US is a pretty big and diverse country. As its official online representative, I can try to answer your questions. :^)

Do you guys have anything especially planned? Locations/sights or particular things you want to do? Any particular cities or States you wish to visit?

How many people would go?

Prices of goods varies from place to place, and some States have a sales tax while others don't.

It's definitely cheaper than England for most things. Most notably food, especially portion sizes. When on vacation I only need to eat once or twice a day! I've only ever visited the west coast though, so I'm hardly an expert.

RE: bars - don't forget to take i.d. I was 28 when I first went and got i.d'd all over the place. I was quite flattered

Is there anything in particular you guys want to see? If you like nature and camping you can't go wrong with California.

California has the worlds oldest living tree (Inyo National forest), the worlds tallest trees (Redwood National Forest), The lowest elevation in the US (Death Valley), the tallest mountain in the contiguous US (Mount Whitney). It also has over 800 miles of scenic coastline.

On the downside it is pricey, especially gas.

Stick to the East coast if you are interested in more historical areas.

I like that you're gonna have an american sabbatical, lol.

You can find cheaper motels for 30-60 bucks a night most places around the highways, diner food isn't too expensive and a half-decent chain restaurant (Outback Steakhouse, Hollihans, etc) will set you back about 30 bucks each with beer included. Beer ranges from a buck or two in local waterholes to five bucks and above in the higher class establishments.

If you stop by the Philadelphia/New Jersey area we gotta meet up in person for sure!
