I think the penguin works because of the bow-tie which allows you to make the James Bond connection and it helps drive the joke. Anything else would just look like a bird holding a gun and I don't think anyone would get it.
Great improvements. The shadows look good, but the one under that rock on the left above the skeleton just doesn't look exactly right. I like the extra plants. The skeleton is a great touch to add some contrast to the foreground. Loving this direction.

Re-drew the burnt shmallow and added a "floor" to the scene. I put a halftone background behind everything, just to see what it looked like, and I think it's ok. What do you all think? The bag and the other marshmallows still need some work, but I'm happier with this version.

Well, in the meantime you could try Inkscape. It's a free program similar to Illustrator. Not as robust, but it may work for your needs right now. http://www.inkscape.org
