My first and most important question: what tools does one use when designing these shirts? I recently downloaded a free trial of Adobe Illustrator, but when I tried it was like using a more frustrating version of paint. So, how do you all do it? I have some ideas, but no idea about how to go about making them.

Help?

Next question: what is the meaning of life...?

Oh yeah, I asked it.

:D

Ta!

Illustrator is not really like drawing like you do with a paper and pencil. . . It is still a very amazing piece of software though and great if you want to resize your art without losing any quality. I prefer to work in Adobe Photohop with a wacom tablet, which is more like actual drawing for me =)

btw the meaning of life is 42 in case you wanted to know

illustrator is a vector program vs photoshop being raster... so instead of drawing lines like in paint (another raster program) you have to think in terms of drawing objects.

it can be a little frustrating, but once you get used to it it gets really fun.

also try the videos @ lynda.com for pointers... here's the illustrator section

there is a reason that designers get paid money to design things. It's because it's not easy for others to just jump into it and do it at a professional level.

If you are serious about t-shirt design you need to realise that there is going to be a fairly serious learning curve a long the way, but illustrator is the program you'll want to be learning.

I draw everything by hand.

Then upload it on laser disc, project it on my wall, then stencil with charcoal. I send that in to Threadless. They always love it and ask me to submit a design. I do and they always print it.

Here's the account I use to submit designs

I hope this helps.
