So I've been taking this ethics class all year and I think it's starting to get to me...

But I have a simple question to ask ya'll:
(my friends and I have been debating for awhile!)

Imagine you are driving through a flat deserted state, in the middle of nowhere (imagine west texas) and you can see for seventy miles in each direction and there is a four way stop ahead. You can see that there is absolutely no cars anywhere in sight (no animals or people either!)...

would you still stop at the four way stop?

Why/Why not?

No I wouldn't.

The stop signs in this situation are placed for safety reasons if more than one car traveling down these roads that intersect. Given your situation I can clearly see that there is no other car approaching from any angle and thus driving through the sign would not be a safety concern for myself or another driver.

Also given the clear visibility, flat terrain and lack fear for getting a ticket I would likely be driving the highest speed possible which I deem safe in the particular vehicle that I happen to be driving at the time. I'm going to go ahead and assume I am driving my car which means that the speed would be driving would likely be between the 90-100 MPH range. With no safety concern there is no way I going to bring my car down from 100 to a full stop.

because the signsthat are made for being respected have to be respected if it involves some posibble danger for someone else. (And if you can see far away that no one is coming that sign is not useful for me)

yes, because maybe it's there for a reason (like a blind spot or something)

I would stop, get out of my car, walk to the middle of the intersection, drop my pants, and pee while spinning in a circle.

How is that a morality question?

Stopping at a stop sign isn't really a serious key to someones moral compass

its about following the law?

actually the curvature of the earth wouldn't allow you to see 77 miles away, only 8 miles, but ya out of habit I would, if i drove that is.
WHITEHOTACTION

Agreed this is not a morality issues as much as it is a test of one's deductive reasoning.

I would stop because I have the shittiest luck of all time and would get pulled over by an invisible police spaceship if I ran a stop sign.
Merzi
Merzi on Feb 19 '09 at 7:09pm
Maybe its more an ethical question than a morality question. It created to see if you would obey the law.

I agree with many of you, I'm actually surprised at these answers!
I made that point that you have to realize these signs were put there for safety reasons and if you know it is safe there is no need to stop. That would just waste gas.

We cannot blindly follow laws and not use some common sense.

eric! Why would you stop?
Khol
Khol on Feb 19 '09 at 7:12pm
I would stop.
I still stop when I'm driving through the back country roads and I know there are no other cars or even cops around, so I'll probably do the same in a desert.

I have a terrible fear of breaking the law.

But we have to realize the laws were created by people just like us, it is not some magical intangible thing.

And we have to realize that in life (not even considering the laws) just looking at the situation it is absolutely pointless to stop.

mezo
   mezo on Feb 19 '09 at 7:17pm
I'm convinced that stop sign isn't a real stop sign either, but a lone gunman dressed up like a stop sign ready to pop 16 caps in your back bumper if you don't stop. That'd be my luck.
Merzi
Merzi on Feb 19 '09 at 7:18pm

Khol
Khol on Feb 19 '09 at 7:19pm
Sure, it might be pointless to stop, but if it's the law that people like us have put in place then what reason do I have to not stop?

I'm driving through a desert. A 3 second stop isn't going to pass the time any faster.
noodlezoop
noodlezoop on Feb 19 '09 at 7:19pm
for that matter...why wouldn't you stop? if you saw a sign in the middle of this vast nowhere telling you to stop, wouldn't you wonder if you were about to see something spectacular? like a piano falling from the open sky?

honestly, I'd expect to see something. I might even get out of the car and stand around looking perplexed, like Cary Grant did in that bit in North By Northwest.

My husband & I drove west from Alabama and then all the way up California to get to Washington 2 years ago. That said, we did stop at all stop signs to give our tired bored eyes a break at staring at fucking beige surroundings the whole time.

I'd stop. it's not like stopping is going to hurt me or anything.
Merzi
Merzi on Feb 19 '09 at 7:22pm
Khol, the reason not to stop is there is absolutely no need at all.
You are literally just wasting gas stopping and starting, which if you want to take it even further, would just hurt the environment unnecessarily, which is also unethical.

haha good point noodlezoop

I used to think that too, "it's the law no matter what the situation"

*But when does common sense come into play?*
Khol
Khol on Feb 19 '09 at 7:27pm
You're not stopping and starting, you're breaking and the accelerating. Which wouldn't make much of a different in the amount of emissions that are being released - you're still driving a car.

I'm just saying that if you said that we're the ones who are the reason behind the law, then wouldn't it be up to us (ethically) to uphold it?

I bet you that there is a traffic camera hidden in a cactus.
I hate those cameras.
mezo

This is not a morality question. It's a judegemnet call.

No, I would not. Why? Becuase I would not be endangering anyone's life; which is why the law is there in the first plcae.

Merzi
Merzi on Feb 19 '09 at 7:37pm
you KNOW that there is NO POINT in stopping, all your senses tell you that.

Why stop when your common sense tells you it is completely safe and there is no point to stopping? You shouldn't just say "it's the law so I follow it" you need some healthy skepticism.
Malcolm Man
Malcolm Man on Feb 19 '09 at 7:39pm
I'm pretty sure they'd be a cop hiding inside a cactus.

Also, I'd probably stop for dramatic effect. I'd hop out of the vehicle, leaving the door ajar and pensively gaze out at the horizon. Then I'd say something like, "We're at the cross roads of the world. Anything is possible. Chose your path..."

The the camera would zoom out from a helicopter and the credits would start rolling.
noodlezoop
noodlezoop on Feb 19 '09 at 7:39pm
you're arguing from a position of omniscience and therefore lack of curiosity that doesn't speak to me.

so why am I traveling on this road? am I in a hurry? what kind of hurry?
Merzi
Merzi on Feb 19 '09 at 7:40pm
haha, that's what I'm thinking, like the end scene of Cast Away!
Merzi
Merzi on Feb 19 '09 at 7:43pm
hmmm, maybe if I wasnt in a hurry i'd stop just to see what its like to be in the middle of nowhere all alone. Just to hear how quiet and calm everything is, woah, I think you just blew my mind a little noodlezoop
mezo

I fought the law & the law won.
Khol
Khol on Feb 19 '09 at 7:45pm
Ahahahahahha, Malcs, I wanna be in your movie.

But again, if you argue that there in no point in stopping, then it's same for saying that there is no point to not stop.

It's an empty desert, why am I even on the road in the first place?

And like everyone else has already said, this is a question of judgment not a question of morality.
