From my limited experience, Threadless seems to reign in this market (specifically in terms of user/customer base). However, I have noticed a couple of other websites that are doing similar stuff (design competition, voting, etc.).

How many of these are there? What are they? I'm interested to see different takes on this idea (no worries; my heart is still with Threadless)!

hey banana, thats me! I just don't like to toot my own horn on here because threadless doesn't like that kind of thing. As far as the name.... everything on the net was already taken and I wanted to match the site with the business name.

Interesting. The reason I ask... I'm in the screenprinting biz, too. What kind of setup do you have, Squigey? I work for a small biz (~8 People) called Groggy Dog. We've got a 10-head and a 14-head automatic press.

I'm getting some MySQL trouble over at ShirtStain.com

I'm a one man shop. Do my own art, printing, etc. I have a manual (which I hardly use) and 6 head M&R Sportsman automatic press. Been doing it for 3.5 years now and just bought out my partner this last spring so I own the whole shibang all to myself. I just started shirtstain.com as a side hobby to my screenprinting shop. Plus, I saw so many great designs going to wasted.... I had to do something about it.

i get the same trouble at shirtstain?

jamco - do you guys do all your own seps and what kind of sep process do you use the most?

You could always watch Preshrunk for T-Shirt "reviews".. which is a cool way to find new shirts and new places that are making t-shirts.
jamco
jamco on Aug 11 '06 at 12:11pm
Yeah, we do all our own seps. That website is extremely out-of-date, and we have moved almost entirely to vector-based art. Most of our clients prefer it, it has become our style, and doing seps out of Illustrator is a breeze!

P.S. - *shameless plug* - if anyone ever wants their artwork separated, I'm a pro!

Oh, and the other guy that works with me is named Vince - He's got 2 designs in the running right now -- Bright Future"> and Royal Mistake. He's a darn good illustrator. Vote well!

Oops I'm spamming myself here. That was Bright Future.

yeah, I don't even touch anything unless its vector. For 99.9% of my customers, that is what they want anyways. Illustrator vector work makes it so easy to trap, choke, etc.

Are you guys printing your positives on clear film or vellum?

Hmmm, I can go to my site and I don't see any problems. Are you guys getting an error message?
jamco
jamco on Aug 11 '06 at 12:17pm
I'm not getting the error now.

We print on vellum, usually. We're still holding out an a reasonably priced/quality acrylic printer (Epson supposedly has one in development).

oh man i was gonna shamless plug my separtation skill! haha

but i do alot of index and simulated process seps - index are by far my favorite sep process

spot color is a breeze and illustrator makes it easier and easier each time they put out a new version
squigey
squigey on Aug 11 '06 at 12:24pm
I print out my positives using FastRip, FastInk, FastPos (clear sheets from screenprinters.net) and my Epson Stylus 3000. Really dark positives with spot-on registration. I did vellum for about a month when I started out but decided I should spend the money to upgrade to clear film.

I actually flew to Phoenix a couple of weeks ago to take the DTG class (Direct to Garment). That technology is freakin awesome but they don't have the dark shirts quite yet.

Hey Jake - I might have to hit you up for some pointers on index seps. I'm really interested in the process. Do you have any links you could point me too as a primer?
squigey
squigey on Aug 11 '06 at 2:17pm
search for color seps on the artist boards of http://boards.screenprinters.net/

this site has a crazy wealth of knowledge.

Cool - thanks squigey.

BTW, where do you do business?
squigey
squigey on Aug 11 '06 at 2:31pm
I'm in Lubbock, so we're neighbors! Go Tech!

oh, started poking around and found something that might help you start off : http://www.teedesign.com/Technical_Info.htm

I don't do the simulated process work so I have no idea if that helps. You gonna be going to the ISS in Ft Worth in October?
jamco
jamco on Aug 11 '06 at 2:37pm
Yeah, I'll most likely be there. If not me, someone from this Co. will be. Thanks for the link.
ekaj47
ekaj47 on Aug 11 '06 at 2:47pm
i dont have any links i learned by looking at other peoples index seps and a guy we used to do work with showed me how he did it once and then i sorta tought myself - i could send you a sample file - thats all it really takes - its pretty easy

simulated process is tougher than index i would say
