Let's warm up your brain with this math game.

I'll post 5 numbers (from 0-9). Can't have more than 3 of the same number.

Then, I'll post another number less than 999 , which will be the desired result. The next person will have to use math operators [+,-,*,/,^ (power), sqrt (square root), ! (factorial)] to compute the result from the 5 numbers.

for example:
question:
1 1 2 5 6 = 34

solution:
5*6 + ((1+1)!)^2 = 30 + 2^2 = 34.

After you post a solution, then you can post a new question.
===============

1st question

1 1 3 5 7 = 229

Like the maths part of countdown, but not as cool (unless you're Carol Vordeman)

that factorial isn't needed in your example. you're just showing off :-p
thammaknot
thammaknot on Sep 07 '07 at 12:15pm
:) I'm not showing off...just tried to use as many operators as possible...as an example.

anyone?

is there a definite solution for this, or are you just pulling random numbers and sending us on a journey that continuously approaches the y-axis but never quite gets there?
marblecargirl
marblecargirl on Sep 07 '07 at 12:21pm
do we need a bottle of water for this journey?
thammaknot
thammaknot on Sep 07 '07 at 12:22pm
haha....my question is actually reasonably easy (at least i didn't mean to make it hard)

there is a solution that requires only a few operators.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Sep 07 '07 at 12:22pm
3^5 - (7 * (1+1)) = 229

shouldn't be too tough

I think i got it....

7*5*(3+1)^2 = 7*5*16 = 7*80 = 560.

bsweber...you can post a question if you want to.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Sep 07 '07 at 12:48pm
that works. the way i did it was

7! / 3^(5-2-1) = 5040 / 9 = 560
bsweber
   bsweber on Sep 07 '07 at 12:48pm
nah you go ahead, i'm working

lol
thammaknot
thammaknot on Sep 07 '07 at 12:50pm
I wouldn't have thought of that...

anyway...here we go

1 3 6 8 9 = 66.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Sep 07 '07 at 12:52pm
9*6+(8+3+1) = 54 + 12 = 66
bsweber
   bsweber on Sep 07 '07 at 12:53pm
