...I don't want to set the bar too high, y'know?

Been far too long since I've gotten to work on this!

The more I tinker with lettering the more I think this is the way to go. The block/comic-book style lettering was too dominant, I think...

I think this might be a bit too large on the shirt... what do you think?

It's not too large, but I can't really understand what it's saying.

I get it but maybe change the phrasing to play off of the 'hypothetical' more?

I'm not sure that the type complements the slogan. The back and forth visual flow is a bit jarring, because the eye wants to go from big to little.

maybe it could be more like a thought bubble, or some other arrangement.

Happy belated birthday by the way!

Thanks, Sam! ...for the birthday wishes and the critique.

I really like the approach of the early typetees (before they were 'typetees', I think) such as Bands That Don't Exist and Oldest I've Ever Been -- where the typography is a simple manipulation or texture, and the words speak for themselves.

In playing with the words, I liked the way the shapes suggested two intersecting planes -- like the hypothetical and the real finding a meeting point. Maybe I'll go back and make a less extreme version -- tweaked, but not as tweaked...

Thoughts?

And to Courtney's point, maybe move the "the other day" to the beginning of the phrase: "Yesterday, I Was In..." or "This Morning I Was In..."

I have Hypothetical on the back burner while I try to push this through...

Does text work? Or just go with the zombie hand? Lemme know. Thanks.

Cool hand! I think the text could totally accentuate this. If done right it'll give it a cool skate/surf feel.
bygrinstow
bygrinstow on Oct 24 '11 at 7:21pm
Thanks! It's hard to tell from the lines only, but the lettering is two colors, plus the shirt color.

If I can figure out Illustrator in the morning, I should have a better draft of this tomorrow...

Text is not done ('clear' part is shirt color, outline and some white parts will be green like the hand, some white parts will be red).

Does this composition work for you? Better with text, than without? Or just go with the zombie hand shaka sign? Thanks.

I think the color on the text should be darker (heavier), to give them a sense of slimey, monster goodness. I would lose the bone on the E, it doesn't seem to mesh well with the other letters.

Look up the art of Jim Phillips or the Swamp Thing logo for cool lettering inspiration.

I agree with you, Sam -- I did a re-jigger of the composition, but I think the font should be more solid and somewhat thinner. It's got to support the hand, but the hand must be the main focus.

I think the hand *almost* works all on it's own -- but since the shaka sign very often has the words with it, it just seems right to keep the words here. Just gotta find the *right* way to do them...

What if a font something like this was done via finger painting?

B. for Hypothetical. The outline makes the text much more exciting.

As for Hang Looser text, I like the white highlights. Maybe the color scheme for the text could be thick dark green with white highlights, and maybe some black detailing.

But I must admit, I don't get the hypothetical situation yesterday slogan.

But I agree with Biobot, go with the outlined version

The text needs major re-drawing, but consider this a test of the color scheme... I think the suggestion about using the bone color is spot on.

B is excellent- ready to sub!

I really like the zombie hand, that's perfect, but the text needs a complete re-haul. The text doesn't work at all.

You can download this free font called Zombie Attack, which I really like. That would work quite well I think, or a similar one at least. It might even be better with no text at all.

Cheers for your earlier comments,

Tom.

Oh and the above hand with slightly darker skin looks better!
bygrinstow
bygrinstow on Oct 29 '11 at 1:48pm
Zombie Attack is closer to what I'm picturing for the lettering -- thinner letters, more italicy.

I'm thinking of a two-tone effect, the sort of thing where mid-way through the letter the color changes so the top and bottom of the letters are different colors.

I'm not sure about red on the letters. Although it would certainly add punch, I don't want to get too gruesome. Trying to skate the gruesome line on this, and I think I may have hit the limit, with shattered bones and ripped flesh.

Once I have the font as best as I think it could be, I'll do an A/B mock up, with and without text...

Thanks for the input!

All about me

Hi,

Do you have a moment to spare for my design blog?

Handy.

Unlike you, I'm old -- old, do you hear! But just like you, I enjoy pictures of vegetables with faces on them and bemoaning the number of submissions to Threadless with skulls in them.

Also, I'm totally sure my own submissions will make me the most beloved member of the community. Or something.
