I was thinking about dying Routemaster, since my wife says the shirt color is lousy on me...

Maybe bluish, greyish or something?

Has anyone ever dyed their shirts?

_______________
UPDATE:
Tuesday night, I dyed Routemaster a new color. What do you think?

dyedroutes

If anyone wants to know the process for their own experiment:

• I used about 4 oz. of Rit Liquid Dye mixed into a gallon to a gallon-and-a-half of hot water.

• I mixed Royal Blue and Kelly Green. I think there was more blue than green in the mix -- I wasn't too particular on the proportions, because I wasn't too concerned about the color. Anything blueish-greenish or greenish-blueish was okay with me.

• I let it soak for about 40 minutes, with occasional nudging, after about a five minute stir at the start.

• Took it out, rinsed it in warm water, then cold, then threw it into the washing machine.

At first I thought I'd gone far, far too far -- it looked pretty much black as I was first wringing it out. Then it just looked blue-black. The details -- like the aerials -- were not visible anymore.

But by the time it came out of the wash, it was clearly green, not blue. And by the time it came out of the dryer, it was not too dark at all...

It did tweak the colors of the print, but I like it this way. I hope Lehel is not going to see this and be all "WTF did you do to my art?!?" I really dig this design -- but I like the shirt even more with the subdued red bus...

I'll tell ya, I'm looking at Threadless shirts in a whole new way...

I've done it.

I bought a pink shirt, but after washing it with some dark colours, it came out of the wash really grey.

So I bleached it to lighten the colour a little.

Then I bought pink dye to recolour it.

It's now a lavender/lilac shade.

I don't wear it anymore.

so it worked out well, then...?

Depends on whether you like lavender/lilac shirts.

did it affect the printing in any way?

The print itself was fine, but it was a one colour design.

Let me know what happens. I need to change the color of this awesome shirt because I want to wear it but the creme color looks terrible on me.

yeah, I hope to add an 'update!' to this blog, once the dust settles and the dyed are laid to rest. er, dry...

also yeah, the creme looks as if I don't have a shirt on and the design is a very elaborate tattoo...

You can always get a Tan if the creme color doesn't look too good with your natural sin color

Okay, I'm pretty sure I'll be doing this. Maybe tomorrow. There is blue dye here at home, and maybe one or two other colors. I'll be playing mad scientist.

I'll post pics of how it works out...

yeah that certainly doesnt look like you diy

Just curious, do you need to do anything to your washing machine after you wash a freshly dyed shirt?
bygrinstow
bygrinstow on Apr 21 '10 at 5:50pm
yeah, it turned out cool, eh?

um, I didn't need to do anything to the machine after -- there was lots of rinsing before I put it in, so that the water coming off the wet shirt was nearly not colored.

My fingers, on the other hand (actually both hands), were a horse of a different color...

'Detail' view:

Detail of Threadless' Routemaster, Dyed Green

The inks did change color -- it's like the whole thing is behind a green filter: the red is more muted and brownish, the blue in the windows is softer, too. The black is still pretty much black. Considering I wasn't 100% in love with the orange used for the bus, I am now 1000% happier with this shirt!

All about me

Hi,

Do you have a moment to spare for my design blog?

Handy.

Unlike you, I'm old -- old, do you hear! But just like you, I enjoy pictures of vegetables with faces on them and bemoaning the number of submissions to Threadless with skulls in them.

Also, I'm totally sure my own submissions will make me the most beloved member of the community. Or something.

Someday I will get ALL of these done.... (hmm, maybe not.)
