I haven't posted process shots in a while. There are a lot of new ones on my Flickr account, but I've been neglecting blogging. Here or anywhere else. I just completed an illustration for Republic of Loose. This is my fourth or fifth illustration for the band and we've gotten into a bit of a collaborative groove, I think.

They understand and appreciate my weird sensibility for things that are monstrous, retro, campy, creepy, and sometimes borderline-inappropriately-sexual. I can't help it. I make what I make. I'm not good at clever concepts. I'm just trying to make something personal and interesting.

Below is my first concept, the revision, and the subsequent completion of the image.

I'm probably going to do a personal work based off the first image, Chengui. I like the Madonna boobs too.

I should probably sub more.

THAT'S AMAZING. $5

You seem like a pro: How do you search in the blogs?? I'm trying to search for myself :)

The arrow next to the search box on the top right of the screen lets you search the "forum" if that's what you mean?

The girl looks great!

How do you make that linework? I've been looking into using Illustrator more, but I can't make the brush strokes like I want to.

Also, don't worry if it's a trade secret. You don't have to explain anything.

The hand drawn text looks fantastic too!

Oh, it's OK, scrap that found out how to do it. Just gotta find some good brushes. The zoom/page size is always a hassle on Illustrator though.

What programs and tools did you use? Just Photoshop, or just Illustrator? Or a combination of the two?

It looks like the sketch was done in Photoshop (blue lines) and then the final in Illustrator. Could be wrong though.

Just gotta find some good brushes

make a few of your own. it's pretty easy and breaks you out of the generic vector mold better than using the inbuilt ones.

The pencils were real pencil. The inks were raster, not vector, in Manga Studio. Most of the time I ink with a real brush and real ink.

Cool, Manga Studio, I'll have to try that out!
Thanks.

All about me

Ray Frenden is a self-taught illustrator with a penchant for monsters and the macabre.

Drawing from a childhood weaned on horror comics, detective novels, trashy films, and retro sci-fi, his brush and ink work hearkens to an older era.

That juxtaposition of old sensibilities for crafting line and a footing in current color and design trends make Ray’s work unique.
