You people know stuff about good comics right? I was at the bookshop and they had 20% off, so I bought a heap of them. But they're all series.

Fables:

I got this ages ago and din't really get into it, but now I am. There's always a desperate-sounding quote on the front comparing it to Sandman. It's not Sandman, it's very different, but in a good way. And it is about stories and I like that. I read up to Arabian Nights but want to read something else for a while. I don't want it to be over too fast.

Scott Pilgrim:

I like this one. It is clever but it's very quick to read. I finished the first one on the train home. It will be over very quickly which kind of sucks.

I haven't read it yet. I'm not sure if I want to start another series right now. I only have the one volume just now. I hope it's good.

What I'd really like is to read just a standalone book rather than another series. Something like Ghost World. Not necessarily in terms of style or subject matter, just something with original characters in a beginning, middle and end story entirely self-contained in that book. Are there any must reads you'd recommend?

Preferably not autobiographies or Alan Moore.

Ghost World used to be my favorite for sure but now I can't decide if it's my favorite anymore

Here are some stand alone novels I thoroughly enjoyed.

Jimmy Corrigan the Smartest Kid on Earth

Blankets

Hmm, Blankets is definitely autobiographical. Jimmy Corrigan looks interesting, although it apparently has some autobiographical elements in it.

I have nothing against autobiographies it's just that the "graphic novel" (I really hate that term) doesn't seem to actually be a medium for writing "novels" and that makes me sad bcause I think it could be a really good format for stories, especially those that are shortish and highly visual, stories that may be suitable as screenplaysbut without buddget constraints and stuff.

I guess it's the nature of the industry which is geared towards publishing monthly installments that what you really get is a story arc from a series.

Just musing.

I really like Neil Gaiman. I think he's done some good standalone work although some are just adaptations of his novels. You see that a lot too. Adaptations of either films or novels.

ah yeah, I didn't see that you weren't interested in autobiographies so I guess scratch those 2 suggestions.

in that case I'd recommend some stuff by adrian tomine, like Summer Blonde or Shortcomings.

^^especially if you like clowes' ghost world, a lot of people compare tomine's style and themes to clowes :)

The Hernandez Brothers -- Love & Rockets is the long-running series, but there are collections published in book format. Ghost of Hoppers is my favourite. It's by Jaime, and it covers characters from the Love & Rockets series, but I read it before I'd read any L&R and really enjoyed it. It's beautifully drawn and he's a great storyteller.

If you really really want a complete standalone book, Gilbert Hernandez wrote Sloth. I tend to like Jaime's stuff more but Gilbert's is good too, and Sloth was good enough that I bought it.

Autobiographical or not, Blankets is a great story. It's easily one of my favorite works of literature, graphic novel or otherwise. I suppose we all have our preferences, but I don't think you should let it's autobiographical nature prevent you from reading (and seeing) Blankets.

Hmm, you could try:

It probably goes without saying that I'm a Craig Thompson fan. "Good-bye, Chunky Rice" looks pretty silly from the surface, but it's deeply heartfelt and accentuated so perfectly by Thompson's art.

I don't really have much to say about this one. Lions in post-American invasion Baghdad.

Judging by what you've read, We3 is probably more of the type of thing you're looking for. Great story and art, it's hard to pass up a story about pets in robotic suits.

The Essex County trilogy is probably one of the best examples of great storytelling through the medium. It's hauntingly beautiful with some genuinely heart breaking moments. It's completely in black and white, and Lemire knows how to make use of that.

The story almost resembles Redwall if you're familiar with that series. Mice with swords and bows and arrows. It's pretty badass.

I'm so out of the loop. I'm going to the states this weekend, I'll see if I can find a decent comic store and maybe use these recommendations.

Fell is just straight-up good crime/noir. Warren Ellis is a brilliant writer, and Ben Templesmith is one of my favorite artists. Each of the "chapters" are pretty short and self-contained little stories, so it's a breeze to read through in one sitting.

I saw Blankets today, it's thicker than From Hell.

It's thick, but damn is it good. I reread it once every couple months and I always manage to find something new in it.
