Is anyone else bothered by the fact that this cow has both horns and an udder? :P

Cows get their horns burned off as babies. Bulls/steers can have this done as calfs too. What's left is the big hard bumb high up on their forehead. But if the burning off part goes bad, then they might have funny little stumpy horns.

Hehe, I see this all the time! There was some animated movie last year or 2005 where the main character was a (male) cow with an udder. I've also seen it in children's books - scary thought!

Yep. Being hornless is just one of the perks of farming as we know it (except for the cows and bulls who are born without horns to begin with). Female cattle most certainly can and do have horns.

I had to fend off a lot of comments from random people about this when I bought Transfarmers before Christmas. Both male and female cattle can have horns, however many breeds of cattle are polled(horns removed) at a very young age as the horns can pose a threat to the other animals, people, and even the animal itself. We once had a steer at home who broke its(partial to begin with, it was polled but not quite correctly) horn on the side of a building. That is undue stress. For these reasons, horns have been bred out of many cattle varieties. Most of our cattle on our farm are born without, although I have been witness to polling on more than one occasion.
