1. not gonna happen, try the Hare Krishnas for free grub

2. not gonna happen, unless you want to drink White Lightening cider from an off licence

3. Seven Sisters Road

4. Soho. Look for signs that say 'Model Upstairs'

5. British Museum!

no, other entertainment was a drug reference, that is, unless you know some really good brothels...

but seriously. drugs, not hugs.

They will most likely come to find you (the drugs).

Take care, it's well rough.

1. Cheap eats: learn to cook. eating out is not going to be cheap here, no matter where you go, especially with the currency conversion. Otherwise, there's Wetherspoon pubs do some good deals - £6.99 for two meals, etc. Subway sells their 6 inch Sub-of-the-Day for £1.99. Stockpot (there's one in Old Compton Street) has some pretty ok meals for about £4. And there's always the kebab/fried chicken places selling meals for about £3.

2. Cheap drinks: not a clue. I don't drink.

3. Nights out: not a clue, I'm boring.

As for entertainment, try some stage shows and musicals. Or go to Soho for some horny fun.

tesco: sorry matey, Hare Krishnas charge for their meals - at least the ones I've been to do. But they're pretty good value, you get loads of stuff for about a fiver, even if it is all vegetarian.

1. Cafes up towards Stoke Newington (Bodrum do a fantastic cooked breakfast on a Sunday, but is very popular with the locals).

2. No such thing. Again, you need to widen your area to the outer lying boroughs to find good bars that don't tax your wallet. I live in the SE of London and have plenty of choices where a pint is still around the £3 mark.

3. Depending what you're into, the cool kids are still hanging out in an around Great Eastern Street in the fashionable part of the Eastend. Good bars are The Strong Rooms, The Barley Mow, or The Reliance for pre club, then onto Herbal for a night of dance action. Cargo is another ok club, but in my opinion only really works as a live venue.

Unless you love pop music, and seeing loads of birds from Doncaster dressed in short skirts, and geezers from Essex fighting and throwing up, then stay away from the Westend at all costs.

4. Get a copy of Timeout every week to find out the best alternative nights to getting lashed. There are tons of good comedy nights out and about. In Greenwich there is a comedy bar that has a good line up most weekends, but again gets pretty packed with locals. The South Bank, near the BFI is ok to hang out, drink coffee and browse book stalls.

5. Must dos in London are go to a football match - not necessarily the big three clubs. But there are so many smaller clubs that its easy to find a good game and pay on the day - Crystal Palace are playing pretty well at the moment. Go to a show at the Royal Festival Hall, the place was built for sound. If you're feeling flush, spend an afternoon up at Primrose Hill. Nice park if it's sunny, good pubs, and pub food, occasionally there are live Jazz bands playing impromtu. Finally, Find out where Chas n Dave are playing. It'll be somewhere in the Eastend, in a local pub that will have the cheapest pint, and best atmosphere. I've been drunk and seen this Cockney knees up duo a couple of times, and it's been the best cheap night out for laughs. Also Tate Modern is good for rooms of free art.

Last meal I got from the Hare's was free. After some global warming march bollocks in Grovsner Square, dishing out delicious vegan stuff. I felt a bit guilty seeing as how it should really have gone to people with no money.

Drugs? just take a stroll down camden high street at any time and you'll be fighting off the aging rastas proffering their wares

Cheap eatz? Any norf london caff will do you a cheap and delicious fry up. You're in a great location, but avoid eating and drinking anywhere in central london, for the price and for the aforementioned skanky hoardes.

Everything will be far more expensive than the States, though. Sorry.

And everything Anushka said, especially Primrose Hill. The view's so nice, to quote a certain mockney.

Samuel Smith pubs for cheap beer:

John Snow, Blue Poss, Glasshouse Stores - all around Soho.

Brick Lane has endless curry houses that aren't that expensive and let you take your own booze.

There are loads of free galleries and museums. Get Time Out for that or The Guardian newspaper on a Saturday for comprehensive listings of what's going on the coming week.

Good call on the John Snow.

Tesco - Chas n Dave at the Amersham Arms in New Cross a few years ago - best version of Gertcha ever. Fact.

There's a really good one just off Drury Lane, in the Westend which is really close to where you are near the British Library. It's either on Stukely Street, or Mack Street. Here's a little map.

The arrows pointing to Drury Lane, the tattoo place is just on the corner of either the two roads above that arrow, I can't remember which.

If you're going to a premier league football match, I'd recommend West Ham. Nice, old school ground set in a residential area, usually a few nutters about for laughs, too. Other than that, maybe charlton or palace.

Or Millwall for a fight.

Go to Emirates. It's a no-brainer. If you want to see football in London, try to get tickets to see Arsenal. It'll cost you £60 for a good seat in the Gods, but do it. Do it! Although, if you don't like football... probably don't do it.

Bram is right - Sam Smith pubs are fucking diamond. I recommend the Polar Bear lager. Can't remember the name of it. But it has a Polar Bear on the tap. 'Chiller' or something?

Go to Westminster bridge - because its one of the nicest places in London. View of the houses of Parliment, the London Eye, St Pauls. Mingle around Parliment Square, Downing Street and Whitehall, then cross Westminster Bridge to the South Bank - and alk along the South Bank stopping in at the Tate Modern and walk up to Tower Bridge where you can see Canary Wharf in the distance to the East and you can cross Tower Bridge to get to Tower Hill and the Tower of London. Also - theres a Sam Smith but a ten minute walk from Tower Bridge in Wapping called the Captain Kid. Which is recommended!

Go to the Emirates if you want to sit with some boring arse, know-nothing fans who hardly sing. It's a monument to the commercial, soulless monster that football has become whereas the Boleyn Ground is a testament to what football was and should still be, a focus for locals and a benefit to the community.

How do people get cool jobs? Serious question.

hard work?

But serriously you have to put yourself out there and be willing to talk to anyone.

I'm applying to film companies in canada, I'm sending off C.V's, covering letters a portfolio of films and photography then I'm going to buy a phone card and ring them if that doesnt impress them I'm really not sure what will.

well, when i say working for, I really mean i'm an intern there, and i get to do no graphics, move boxes / cut flyers all day, and truly hate it most of the time.

as for being a stranger in a strange land, i think i've acclimated pretty well! a boston accent and an english accent aren't that far away from each other, so itwasnt hard to understand (most) people, and I'm a pretty experienced traveller, so i thrive in unknown situations.

I'm not even interested in how good the job is, I just want a lowly job with a company that sells cool shit (like gig tickets. Not sure what those weird projecty sunglasses are).

Hi, I'm an advertising student as the Syracuse University. I do this in my spare time / when i'm supposed to be working on other things at work, really just cuz its fun. I hope people enjoy my art, regardless of its commercial viability as a t shirt.
