Ok, my question is: How is 'simulated process' 8 colors? Because if that's the case, why don't we all use 'simulated process'. It seems we get more colors that way. I guess I'm confused. Any clarification would be great! Thanks!

simulated process isn't 8 colors. it uses more.

some designs lend themselves to using the simulated process... some don't.

8 colours is a traditionsal screen printing method. Process won't always achieve the results you want.

simulated process separates a mutlicolor desing into as few spot color screens as possible which could still be 8 pantone colors or less. even if it looks like theres way more colors, they can still use 8 screens or less.

with straight up spot colors, theres one screen for every color you see, so if we made as many colors as we wanted it would be a ridiculous amount of screens.

does that make sense? I work for a screen printing company, but its kind of hard to explain simulated process

oh. apparently, i don't understand it either.

it is actually a 4 color process that makes it look like more.

also, if you are considering a process print, think very hard about it. threadless probably wont print any simulated process shirt, it'll have to be damned good to do so - especially since it's an expensive way to print shirts.

It's cool, I work for a newspaper- I'm hip to printing processes. So simulated process is like CMYK printing with line screen, dot gain and such - In other words using 1-8 colors collectively to make up other colors? And all the other vector art is using straight up spot colors (1-8) then right?

^ its not quite the same as four color process because you dont just use CMYK to make up your color comp. , but yes, it is expensive and hard to make the separations

cool, thank ya much! it's all so much to take in sometimes. utilizing what's availabe is what i mean. i'm cool with just doing 1-8 color stuff, very simple. but apparently i gotta branch out and try some new things creatively.

do you work in photoshop? its best to do simulated process designs in photoshop and stick to illustrator for spot color designs

My designs

All about me
I sketch/design/illustrate and come up with rather bizarre ideas. Most are unfinished, it's just what I do. It's how I work. I love coming up with anything to do with tentacles, tikis and eyeballs as you will see in my designs and such. Enjoy!
