So recently I've been looking at all of the billions of submitted designs and the shirts that Threadless has chosen to print, and it seems that the Threadless community as a whole has become more "artsy" and less "cutesy". Many of the designs that Threadless chooses to print are ones that I absolutely adore, however, many of them are not the types of designs I would want to wear on my shirts.
Therefore, I think Threadless should come out with a line of posters, and sell them for $10-15(maybe?) (both in the store and online), so that I can buy and support the designs I like, without having to blow $15 on a shirt that I thoroughly enjoy as a piece of artwork, but will most likely only wear once or twice.

Seriously. What does Threadless have to lose by making posters? And I realize that they have wall graphics now but that's not the same as a good old fashioned poster. And plus I don't have that much wall space...or money.

Discuss. Does this sound like a decent idea, or am I just wishfully thinking?

They just made a poster to go with the Torso tee. Plus some of the older designs of this site have been printed in poster form at Artdrop's site, check out his page on Threadless.

I think the prints on Threadless are still half and half in the artsy/cutesy department. I personally like clever well-drawn pun tees over all-over-the-place works of art that MIGHT look good on a tee, but there are many on this site that despise those kinds of designs so it's all good and everyone gets a little bit of what they want. The ultimate comporomise where everyone's happy.

one problem... large scale posters dont cost $5 each. There alot more exspensive even in large bundles.

okay well $5 was just a suggested price. I'd be willing to pay more if that's what it would take.

Thanks FrickinAwesome for the heads up on the poster happenings. I'll check them out. And I agree that Threadless is the ultimate compromise, but recently I've been unhappy with the designs that have been coming out, and I thought that many of them would look/sell better in poster form.

and although I would totally buy Torso in poster form, I'm not crazy about it on a shirt, and thus am not willing to pay $25 for it all.

I don't care as long as they continue printing puns. :)

good posters are usually 10-15. I have the Torso poster, it's pretty good, except it had to be folded up for shipping.

As much as I would love to see that... it would result in me being totally broke. But really, there are def a lot of designs I love but could never see myself wearing.

exactly geekgirl06 that's what I mean. Threadless has so many designs that just aren't t-shirt worthy in my opinion. and i would pay between $10-15 for a poster.

Honestly, I've thought about just buying some of the t-shirts, folding them over some backing and framing them. If you think about it, some of these shirts are $15 works of art. That's pretty cheap for sweet artwork. Posters would be nice too. But yeah, high quality prints on high quality material doesn't equal $5 product.

alright, well thanks for the info. And folding and framing the shirts would work well and have the same effect, but it would be a little too much effort, and I think it would cost more in the end (what with the framing fees and all)

Fees like buying a frame and putting the shirt in there yourself?

In any case, prints of Threadless winners would be neat, but that would probably have to expand some of Threadless' legal rights with artwork and create other business complications that I'm not savvy enough to be aware of. Plus, if you look around, a few of the artists who have had stuff printed sell prints of their own stuff, although maybe not poster sized.

hmmm. interesting. I hadn't really noticed that. thanks, I think I'll check out a few of the artists' websites to see if their stuff is available in poster size.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if you win on Threadless now they take full copyright of the design now -

... If your Design is selected for use by Threadless.com, you acknowledge that you assign to skinnyCorp LLC and its subsidiaries and affiliates (hereinafter collectively "Threadless.com") the entire right, title, and interest in and to the copyright in your Design...

I think this may cover the use of the artwork for the graffiti motifs they produce and sell for charity.

I reckon your idea is spot on though. Why not extend the prints to posters? There are plenty of designs that are solid but some may not be inclined to actually wear them.

Definitely worth looking into...

Thank you francobolli for giving that tidbit of info, that, as you said, seems to suggest that Threadless takes the full copyright on every winning design. If that's true, that would make it much easier to petition them to extend the prints to posters, because they wouldn't have to go through the hassle of getting each artist's approval.
