your credit card company will freeze your card and investigate it.. then you will be sent a form to fill out on the purchases for you to check off.. then it will get fixed within the 2 months

If it's a major credit card with a big bank I'm sure they'll sort it out and you'll get all your money back.

if they have your credit card number and they were mostly online purchases, most likely they have your billing name and address and they might have even applied for more credit cards using your information

Oh yeah.. i still had the card, i took it in to the bank and they cut it up.. apparently they just hit random numbers untill they find one that works.

regardless of that, you should still need your name and/or address in order to complete a purchase using the credit card

It doesnt appear to be online purchases though cos its restaurants and hair salons and stuff so I have no idea how they did it.

I wouldnt be surprised Nate.. We dont have to show I.D here in AUS for credit card purchases like you guys do , so who knows how much easier it is in Malaysia.

our policies on the identification issue for credit card purchases vary over here, some places ask for it, some dont but you still need the physical card to make a purchase

maybe someone from a restaurant cloned your card? That happened to my bf and some jerk charged $700 on his card. He eventually got the money back but it did take awhile.

Im just about to walk out the door and the Bank rang me to tell me that she just tried to make a $6000 purchase on my already maxed out cancelled card .. Im hoping this means that someone over there has her in a choke hold waiting for the police to take her down and make her send me all the sushi she bought on my card.

i borrowed my mums credit card to buy some stuff online the other day, and it only came up to about 200 bucks but the bank called her to check if it was legit about....30 minutes after i bought it!

Right, I'm almost scared to confess that I'm from Malaysia and I've only just come back from Kuala Lumpur myself.



Unfortunately things like this do happen there, (though it also happened to me in London a couple of years ago, when they spent £1800 on paying off gambling debts...).



Anyway. It's quite likely that they clone your card ie copied the information onto a blank card. This is why credit card companies tell you to never let your credit card out of your sight - all it takes is a second for them to make a pass on their own reader and they've captured all the details on the magnetic strip. Then they simply make a copy and voila. Over there there's no chip and pin, so all they have to do is sign the card and go to town.



And buy hair colouring and fitness equipment.



On a related note, I do know that employees in Malaysia are horrifically unprofessional when it comes to checking signatures on cards, in that they don't. At all. I went shopping with my parents all the time and never saw them even glance at the signature. Ever.



I do feel sorry that this has happened to you, though - I know I felt very anxious too when I lost all that money. But I got it back, and you will to, fo' shure.



Maybe you can do what I do: take a bank card and make withdrawals at ATMs in future. I never use credit card abroads.
