in 3 days I will be on your soil.. I only have a few little requests.
Please please please can you keep the natural disasters to a minimum while I am there.I have seen enough movies on earthquakes and twisters to know those things are scary.

Also if i forget to tip your people please don't hate me.. I can't help it.. I'm Australian , I promise I will try to remember.

Yours sincerely

heheh No its not really a custom standard to tip here.. some people ask for tips but they usually get a smartarse comment like "look after your mother"

Im going to hawaii, chicago, boston, new york, LA ...eeep! hurricanes!
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jul 23 '08 at 9:04am
well, boston and new york shouldn't be a problem
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:08am
the hurricanes are in TX, you got nothing to worry about
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jul 23 '08 at 9:13am
unless LA falls off into the ocean, but that's totally unlikely :-p
edean
edean on Jul 23 '08 at 9:14am
you wouldn't have to worry about hurricanes anywhere other than the east coast...
if they're on the west coast they're called tropical storms

*ends smart-ass comment*

take lots of pictures, you should have a blast
are you going to the threadless store in chi-town?

are there no natural disasters in australia?
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:19am
Tess, we don't have a culture of tipping.. Our wages are higher (maybe?) and tipping is not expected. Here you tip when you actually like your service.

haha I've lived in CA for 10 years (total), both northern and southern, and the only earthquake I've ever experienced was when I was in 4th grade, and it just felt like someone was kicking the back of my chair in class lol.
you will be fine i promise.

sillybanana
sillybanana on Jul 23 '08 at 9:23am
Somni, we do but not as disasterous and frequent as you guys do, and they are mostly in the low populated areas.
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:24am
No sonmi, we are on the one plate so there is nothing like earthquakes or tremors..

We don't tend to get tornados or tsunamis or twisters. We sometimes get hurricanes but very very rarely.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:25am
We get hurricanes all the time. They're called cyclones here.
sillybanana
sillybanana on Jul 23 '08 at 9:25am
we have had one earthquake .. newcastle in the 80s thats the only one i have heard of that did any damage I think.
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:25am
The worst hurricane I can think of was in 94 in Darwin about Christmas time. But I was only 6 when that happened..

Most hurricanes don't even hit our shores..
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:26am
I thought it was physically not possible to have an earthquake considering we're on the one continental plate??
sillybanana
sillybanana on Jul 23 '08 at 9:26am
Cyclones don't rip up houses , they make the surf bigger.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:27am
Don't you remember paying $14 for bananas?

America isn't like full of natural disasters all the time, btw... haha...
Wiffler
Wiffler on Jul 23 '08 at 9:28am
would that be for regular bananas or silly bananas?
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:28am
Hahaha I totally do Squatterjohn, but I didn't think that one did as much damage as the 94 one??

Maybe it's just cos it was Christmas ;-;
Wiffler
Wiffler on Jul 23 '08 at 9:29am
Yeah! We only have hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and wild fires...
sonmi
   sonmi on Jul 23 '08 at 9:30am
interesting! i always wonder about stuff like that, because i can't imagine not having natural disasters. stupid tectonic plates. not that i'm necessarily affected by those. just... tornadoes.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:31am
Are you thinking of 1974, Jebbie?
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:31am
maybe

i fail at everything..
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:32am
Cos that was a huge cyclone, Cyclone Tracy, you're right, just a bit off on the date. It was hugely disastrous and prob the only one to ever hit a major city (and pretty much destroy it). We're usually lucky cyclones don't hit urban areas and suff.
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:33am
74! no wonder why i dont fucking remember it. i'm sure you do though old man
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:33am
We get fires :(
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:35am
oh jebbie, here our waiters are paid like 2.50 because tips are part of their pay- thats cool about australia though
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:35am
You got the second number of the date right and the Christmas part. You were close.
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:36am
I'm so smart that I should be American.

Poor American waiters, Tess :(

sillybanana
sillybanana on Jul 23 '08 at 9:37am
Yeah 74 was well before I was born too , and where i live we get storms , but never tragic, and the cyclones stay out to sea, and no fires...so i am spoilt..and scared of bad luck in America.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:39am
You're welcome, Jebbie.
Jebbie
Jebbie on Jul 23 '08 at 9:40am
We get fires near here. It was bad summer of dec 01/jan 02 if I recall.. We just came back from England and it was all hazy and the sky was gross and the sun was like burnt orange o.o
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:46am
Those fires were awful. They also happened at Christmas. They were maybe going to cancel New Year's and my dad thought it was all a plan by Osama bin Laden. It totally burnt the Royal National Park.

Jebbie, I'm in the middle of a continental plate, and we still get the (very rare) occassional earthquake because of this.

My geology teacher also told us that it's been building so long without release that it'll likely kill us all. He liked the drama.
trindli
trindli on Jul 23 '08 at 9:55am
kali, you can keep watching this site if you are afraid of earthquakes.. it will probably not predict one since we can't do that, but you will see if there was one somewhere and then the risk around this area is increased (its only for california..)

and jebbie, it's possible that there are earthquakes in the center of plates, but less unlikely.. but you do have earthquakes in Australia.. proof:
http://www.quakes.uq.edu.au/seis_maps/l..

sorry, I stop now :)
sillybanana
sillybanana on Jul 23 '08 at 9:56am
Thiswas Australias worst Natural disaster.. in 1989 13 people died
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:57am
Those earthquakes are all very, very small though. I doubt a Californian would even notice.
ladykat
ladykat on Jul 23 '08 at 9:57am
Yeah, the American tipping system is total bull. Waiters should be paid at least minimum wage and tipping shouldn't be expected.

Either that, or it should just be incorporated into the food prices, like they do in Europe. It's insane that you have to add about 25 - 30% to your meal price for tax & tip.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jul 23 '08 at 9:57am
Kali means worst Earthquake, I'm sure.
sillybanana
