A few nights Simon Cowel posted this on the blogs:
He did it, not because he really believes women are bad artists compared to men; but to provoke a gender issue debate. Because of hostile reactions, (from people like me who took it seriously), he took it down pretty quickly. I'm putting it up to spawn a discussion. (be nice) 覧覧覧覧 Blog title: Men seem to be better artists (Posted by Simon Cowel) I don't mean to be rude but, this is my theory. Men seem to be better artists than women. There are exceptions, obviously. But I'd say overall, men tend to have an advantage in this field. Now, I'm sure you'll all start pointing out examples, but hear me out. In general, it's true. I think this may have something to do with the fact that men are just more visual than women. Women in turn seem to have the advantage in the emotions department. Women have the advantage in expressing their emotions, and I think that may be the reason more women have won American Idol than men have. They can really get the audience to connect with them and feel what they are feeling when they sing. This may explain why men seem to have an advantage making designs that can convey a message visually without the use of text. You'll notice that a majority of winning artists are men. I only bring this up because I'm curious to hear other's thoughts on this topic. I am not taking a shot at women here at all. Infact a couple of artists that have large followings here are women. Julia Sonmi Heglund and Priscilla Wilson come to mind. Do you think they have more emotion in their work than most? In Priscilla's case, I think she does. Ms. Heglund is just extremely talented and on a different plane than most. Just wanted to start a discussion on this topic. Gender differences fascinate me. 覧覧覧 In response: Slicedbread8 wrote something too hostile to repeat, but, it was something about Simon being an idiot for judging women artists based on his observations on a male dominated microcosm of low art Tshirt site. (slicedbread8 is driven by emotion, has insomnia, an impulse control problem, and pms, so forgive her.) A bunch of other people started writing negitive comments too, calling Simon a coward hidiing behind a false name etc.... Then... 覧覧覧覧 Simon wrote: I'm going to delete this blog soon. :) I just wanted a discussion. Because I do think it's quite sad that Threadless is highly dominated by males. slicedbread, I think you nailed it on that one. You got me to take this silly blog down. Not that I dislike *覧覧覧*, but he kind of sums up reasons that Threadless kind of makes me sick sometimes. and The weird Threadless celebrity status and priority it seems his subs get make me scratch my head sometimes. He's technically sound, and I understand why Threadless prints him. People do treat him like a god, and sometimes I even think they would buy anything that said *________* at the top of the page. Who knows, maybe that weird celebrity status people seem to get here on Threadless even explains why one would make alternate accounts. (thats the end of what Simon wrote) ___________ *I took the name out to be nice* Don't want to start a blog about *覧覧覧* But thought gender issues, the difference between men and women in art, and the question of why threadless is so dominated by men, might be interesting to start a discussion on. (or maybe I just like stirring up shit, i don't know).
