Seeing as "indie" music is a broad, vague and oftentimes contradictorily used term, for our purposes it's the music that a lot of people on this website tend to like. If you are one of those people who continues to be mystified as to who Elliott Smith is or what The Shins sound like, well here is "Indie" music 101 in playlist form. Once you conquer the basics you will be able to move onto even more obscure bands like Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Scotland Yard and Camera Obscura.

Indie 101 pt. 1

1. The Funeral - Band of Horses
2. Skinny Love - Bon Iver
3. First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes
4. Do the Whirlwind - Architecture in Helsinki
5. Fight Test - The Flaming Lips
6. Pictures of Success - Rilo Kiley
7. Intervention - Arcade Fire
8. Absent Afternoon - Calexico
9. All Good Things - The Weepies
10. The Trouble I've Been Looking For - Magnetic Fields
11. amsterdam - Peter, Bjorn and John
12. Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl - Broken Social Scene
13. You Own Me - American Analog Set
14. Proofs - Mates of State
15. Phantom Limb - The Shins
16. Chicago - Sufjan Stevens

Indie 101 pt. 2

1. Such Great Heights - Postal Service
2. White Daisy Passing - Rocky Votolato
3. Another Sunny Day - Belle & Sebastian
4. Racing Like a Pro - The National
5. Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect - The Decemberists
6. Soul Meets Body - Death Cab for Cutie
7. Naked As We Came - Iron & Wine
8. Oslo in the Summertime - Of Montreal
9. Sleep Tonight - Stars
10. Peace & Hate - The Submarines
11. NYC - Interpol
12. Heartbeats - José Gonzalez
13. How We Breathe - Pinback
14. White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes
15. Twilight - Elliott Smith
16. Eyes - Rogue Wave

I'm gonna do a couple of mixes, I had left off Rogue Wave on the 1st and 2nd but I might do a 3rd if there is enough interest.

Brian I specifically have you in mind here.

are neutral milk hotel indie? animal collective? the mountain goats?

I guess Okkervil River, Wolf Parade, Andrew Bird and Frightened Rabbit are?
Kookaberry
   Kookaberry on Oct 12 '09 at 10:19pm
Yes to all of those except I don't know who Frightened Rabbit are so I'm guessing. I had Andrew Bird and Okkervil river but got cut due to size constraints. I'll probably do a couple more mixes sometime this week. I tried to hit all the big bands aka Death Cab, The Shins, etc.

I think indie is a very broad term really, and not all that specific

Neutral Milk Hotel = i heart
Kookaberry
   Kookaberry on Oct 12 '09 at 10:20pm
Neutral Milk Hotel are like ultimate indie, I actually should have included them instead of some other band. /mefail

shakethesheets on Oct 12 '09 at 10:24pm
ah. I guess I just don't tend to consider older bands as indie, since it's only in modern day such a broad classification.

but there is that whole beginning of indie in the 90s thing, Pavement, Sebadoh...

I disagree with this list...... actually now that i realized you wrote the song titles first and bands second this list is better... but comon, no mountain goats or neutral milk hotel? not even bright eyes? and what about all the awesome indie hiphop and electro, gimi some easop rock and MSTRKRFT
Kookaberry
   Kookaberry on Oct 12 '09 at 10:31pm
Indie music gave hope to accordion and banjo players everywhere that they might still be laid by a girl with glasses who doesn't need glasses, ballet flats and electric blue lamé pants from American Apparel.

You should teach the class on this! Nice work with Anthem from Broken Social Scene, it's one of my favorite songs of all time.

the Garden State soundtrack's pretty good for your beginner indie needs as well.

I've got some undownloaded Band of Horses. At least, I'm pretty sure my digital copy of Everything All the Time isn't downloaded from iTunes. Is there any way I can send it to you? I'm not that bright.
