Not to be confused with the WB's lovely delerious childhood cartoon show. Ahem. When I was in high school, I loved anime. But sadly, I was only one of like 3 others. It was always a thrill to hunt down the aisles in Best Buy and if you tried reaallllly hard and spent a good deal of time looking in every nook and cranny, you might just find yourself a badly dubbed anime video. Or if you woke up at 5 am in the morning, you could catch Ronin Warriors on your local TV station. Hurrah!

When I graduated and had to start supporting myself, anime no longer intrigued me as it once did as the main ones available were series, and if I buy a series, you know I'll eventually just buy them all. And a student's salary is not cut out for that. At the same time as my interest was waning, DVDs were making a huge surge and now animes have their very own section; even entire aisles!

Now I think I may get back into it. I haven't seen a sngle one in years (literally). The last I saw (and really liked) was X/1999. From what I've seen, Romeo x Juliet, Claymore (maybe I just miss Buffy), and to a slightly lesser extent Persona: Trinity Soul look intriguing. What do you like and/or recommend?

One Piece, subbed, but only if you're in the mood for something epic and...340+ episodes long.

I've been trying to get into Anime, but it's hard, because I hate japanese culture humping american people.

My cousin showed me this "female-Trigun" because he thought I'd dig it since I like action heroines and all, but, I don't remember the title of it but it had an overly, and I mean overly, busty gun-slinger woman who would calm criminals down by holding them to her bosom. I did not dig it!

Cowboy Bebop: space bounty hunters

Samurai Champloo: hip hop samurai

Azumanga Daioh: hilarious school girl everyday anime

Mushishi: artistically gorgeous folktale-like anime

Fullmetal Alchemist: an alternate world where alchemy exists; an excellent epic anime

RahXephon: futuristic alien/mecha anime, one of my favorites, and I don't even like mecha that much

I saw the artwork to RahXephon and it did look cool, and I normally don't like mecha either! The closest I ever got to mecha was with Escaflowne. I know nothing of what RahXephon is about though.

Any and/or all Hayao Miyazaki flicks. Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service...

If you liked Mononoke you'll like the other ones too ~

Unfortunately as much as I dug Mononoke, I never watched any other Miyazaki films because I just never got into his art style.

I liked Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Totoro, but I wasn't crazy about Howl's Moving Castle. Maybe because I liked the original book so much, and they changed it a lot for the anime.

If your looking into Epic Anime Films, then you need to look into Satoshi Kon's works.

"Paprika" is a must watch.

"Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" is one of my favorites right now.

"Lucky Star" is okay.

But I pretty much watch Adult Swim's line up, so you might wanna start there.

Oh, they are going to start Code Geass. Which is also good.

Oh, and Eureka 7 is a basic hit along with Bleach.

nobody said bleach yet??
Kogepan
Kogepan on Mar 19 '08 at 11:07am
Bleach is good up through episode 63 or something like that, and then the filler takes over and pretty much ruins it. They've gone back to canon storyline, but now it's taking so long that I've gotten bored and stopped watching it and am now just reading the manga.

Same with Naruto, only that's like up until episode 137 or something and then the rest is crappy filler. Naruto Shippuuden started recently, and that's from the manga, but the episodes have gotten so Dragonballish where they mostly just stand there thinking at each other or flashbacking instead of fighting that again, bored, stopped watching.

FLCL is the best anime ever made IMHO.

Plus it's only 6 episodes long.

i was really into anime from like 6th grade (1995) to the end of high school. i totally relate to your first paragraph. i was really into sailor moon, and used to wake up at 6am to watch it on a crappy station. i lost interest once i got to college and anime kind of blew up, and i haven't really been able to regain the interest since.

but back then i liked:

· serial experiments lain

· neon genesis evangelion

· niea under 7

· azumanga daioh

· love hina

· oh my goddess

· maison ikkoku

· rah xephon

and all the hayao miyazaki films. i have so much bootleg anime vhs it isn't even funny!

I'm all about Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, and Cowboy Bebop, as far as movies go...Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle are some of my faves. You can never go wrong with some classic Dragon Ball (Z) but not GT. Surprisingly there are a couple of pretty cool ones on the AniMatrix DVD.

I think you're watching the wrong sorts of anime.

Or the right ones, depending on your preferences.

Supply & demand, soul?
ryanwho
ryanwho on Mar 19 '08 at 12:32pm
The reason it seems that way more here is people who don't watch anime don't separate the genres, so it'd be like piling porn with story together with normal movies and asking why so many movies are pornish.
SoulfumeInc
SoulfumeInc on Mar 19 '08 at 12:38pm
i spose, but back when i was 16 (like 99-2000) a large majority of anime included only minutes amount of nudity, whereas now, all I hear about and see is gratuitous amounts of cartoon titties.

yea, youre right ryanwho, I have no doubt that theres plenty of anime without it, but its just weird to me that that has become so associated with anime.

I havent watched anime in years, so I spose Im not really one to speak, but yea...supply and demand...

Japan has advanced its love of fetish to a point where anywhere outside of Japan it seems completely deviant, but inside Japan its pretty normal. This is what happens when you don't have an army to get out that sexual frustration, you become a country of perverts.

Yes, good point. I have eight bookshelves of anime DVDs, NONE of which are hentai anime (porn), and my sisters still think I watch sex cartoons.

But yeah, I avoid the harem boobie type anime, and there's still more than plenty of other kinds of anime for me to buy (unfortunately... most of my paycheck seems to go to anime or here).

Mmm-hmm. I emember the first few animes I watched were Perfect Blue and Ninja Scroll; both had their fair share of nudity and explicit sex scenes. But just like regular films, animes are divided into different genres with the previous two equivilent to an R-rated film. People just have to get that not all animated things are meant for kids, which I guess is caused by animation generally marketed to kids in America.

I've been avoiding anime for years.....not because I hate it, but because I can't afford yet another expensive hobby. Nor do I have the time, nor the space in an already-full house.

Not to mention....if I got into anime in a big way, I'd want to start going to anime cons, and I'm probably waaaaaay too old for that scene (last thing in the world I want is to be part of the "creepy old guy" demographic).
