That is super neato. I need to get one in general, I just started recently drawing a lot, but I keep losing paper.

Not just a sketch book, D3D. A flucking expensive sketchbook!

They retail in the UK for about £8 (16$) for pocket notebooks. I was given loads as presents when I was at college, and screenprinted designs over the covers of all of them.

I don't understand why moleskines are so highly thought of. What makes them worth twice the cost of other sketch/notebooks?

I don't really know either, but they're nice and small and clean... Either way, offering custom artwork engraving for a notebook is pretty damn cool.

Bramish - I think it's something to do with the page structure. I have a feeling they're made so they lie completely flat in the centre no matter where you open the book, so your art/writing can wander from page to page without getting lost in the deep ditch you usually get in the middle of books. Can anyone who owns one of these things confirm/deny this?

(Also, they market themselves as a venerable company beloved of various geniuses throughout history, and thus have acquired quite a lot of clout as a brand... sort of cult following/status symbol thing, I guess. I dunno, it seems a bit funny to me - but if the flat page thing is true I can see why people like them. Personally I prefer Paperblanks because they're soooo preeeetty, etc. *cough* )

And now replying to the actual post... that is cool. However, I'm not sure I'd pay for it - I'd feel like it was kind of a waste of money. Usually I decorate my plain notebooks by drawing on them with Tippex pens. I mean, clearly this is more permanent, but it kind of removes some of the fun of having a personalised notebook, imo.

I love them!

The pages do lie completely flat.
The pages are smoother than normal sketchbook paper.
They are heavier stock so they accept watercolor, acrylic and mixed media really well.
They are a pale yellow - very easy on the eyes and I find less intimidating sometimes than white paper.
The yellow also allows you to use it as a midtone value if you add an opaque white paint or pencil to your drawings.

yes, what castle said.

Sure the moleskines are a little pricey, but sketchbooks aren't something an artist wants to go cheap on. If you can spend the same money on a tshirt, why not spend it on a quality sketchbook.

Moleskines are yesterday's news, peeps. I'm all about Voleskines, similar to the inferior molskine but the paper is made from swans and it's bound with the skins of 4 water Voles!
