...this shirt is perfect for me. I just graduated from college with a degree in professional writing, so I think this might be my first purchase.

i've never heard of a "professional writing" as a degree. is it in journalism or literature or other? being a writing major, does it bother you that haikus may be spelled wrong?

schleb on May 28 '07 at 10:47pm
would it be haikues?

If you're a writing major, how come you just started this blog with a dangling modifier?

OH SNAP!

I also just graduated with a degree in writing, though. So go us.

I'm a writing major, not an ENGLISH major. We took a grammar test for our senior seminar and everyone failed. It was awful.

Professional writing deals with every type of writing: business, sports, technical, poetics, creative, poetry, and writing in cyberspace. It was very intensive but definitely broadened my horizons in terms of what kind of writing I enjoy, now.

Actually, I'm pretty sure haiku is already plural, kind of like deer and moose, can mean one or more than one. But don't quote me on that.

I find it ironic that almost all of the great novelists say that creative writing majors are bullshit.

yes, but it's funny how so many great authors end up teaching it... i'm not planning on writing professionally, although for my internship that starts tomorrow, she said I could write copy....

Ok, no offense, but I don't know about this "writing major" stuff. I have my primary degree in journalism, and I've worked for newspapers and a few small magazines, and I know that it was NOTHING like writing a business paper (and I've written business related things like annual reports, etc.). And I've also written poetry (OK, bad poetry), and participated in slams (and competed in the nationals a few times) and I know it's NOTHING like writing sports (which I've done) or feature stories or hard news stories (which I've also done),etc. But learning how to write poetry, technical reports, business reports, sports, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, etc., all in one class???? Wow.

Oh, and what's the difference between "poetics" and "poetry"?
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 29 '07 at 4:46pm

I think English degrees are actually very marketable. Being able to write well is something of a commodity.
martiandrivein
   martiandrivein on May 29 '07 at 4:49pm
but I'm not a writer!!!!!!!!!!... just part whore, part graphic designer. haha
Iheartgus
Iheartgus on May 29 '07 at 4:51pm
I'm part writer part designer too. But I think they fit nicely together because I love fonts and text and designing fonts... so it goes well with my English major.

skafiend007: Not all in one class, silly! That was my ENTIRE major. I also forgot to include rhetoric, that was a fun class. And Evolution of Writing, and Writing Children's Literature. This major just gets you prepared for any type of writing you want to do, and my internship was copy-editing, which I have fallen love with, so I hope to do that in the future.

Also, English degrees are not very marketable unless you want to teach, and even then you have to go and do more schooling. As for my major, here is the link to our website:

I am happy with my English major. At first I thought it wouldn't be marketable because people always asked me if I was going to teach. But it was really easy for me to find a position after college. And I agree that a vast majority of educated people can't write a simple formula like making a statement and then proving that statement.

Ok, ok, don't slap me....

But I'm still a little confused on how this works. I'm not saying that you're not a good writer, but if jounalism is only a small part of this entire major...

I mean, I had to take FOUR YEARS of various types of journalism classes (sports writing, technical reporting, feature writing, copy editing, news reporting, investigative reporting) just for a journalism degree. So does this class mean you're prepared to be a journalist or a poet or a technical writer for manuals or a children's novelist or whatever kind of writing you want to do?... I'm still confused, but it wouldn't be the first time... :)

I'm always amused by people who think that taking a class -- or even a whole series of classes in a program -- makes you a writer.

And I "teach" Writing.

I can personally attest to the fact that English majors can make a decent living in today's market. You'd be surprised how business people can't write copy for their own website. I did study a lot of necessary subjects and suffered through a lot of critical essays on Yeats, Hawthorne and worst of all, Henry James.

Glad those days are behind me :)

I'm an english major but I don't really wanna be a journalist or a teacher after college. What were your classes like as a writing major? And what kinda job are you going for?
lyrablackheart
lyrablackheart on May 29 '07 at 6:40pm
Right now I'm working as a stacks manager in a library at Cornell University (and yes I AM name dropping). The classes were all right. It doesn't prepare you to be a journalist (we had a communications major for that) but it prepares you to write professionally. I posted the website further up, go take a look if you want.

Those are some mighty fine tractors. But where are the pictures of some mighty fine farmers?!?

Gosh that's alot. I'll just have to start chipping away. The good thing about these shirts is that most are not in black. Being a girl who's a big fan of metal and thus most band shirts come in black, I've recently been looking for shirts that come in colors OTHER than black. This makes my heart happy.
