Ok, so I had a bad dream at 4 in the morning and couldn't get back to sleep. It's going to be a lousy day but one pleasant surprise. I just tried this new instant coffee by Starbuck's called "Via" and have to say it's pretty darn good in case you were wondering! I'm super-picky about my coffee but also super-lazy so this is a really cool option.

Studies have shown that coffee-drinkers live a little longer than non-coffee drinkers and have less likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease and dementia. It's not the caffeine but some other ingredient in the coffee that is responsible, some researchers believe antioxidants in the coffee beans offer this protective effect.

My dad says coffee consumption became prevalent during the Industrial Revolution to further enslave the factory workers by keeping them up to work longer and harder and for this reason he avoids it. For me, it's pretty much an essential nutrient.

So, how do you get yourself going in the morning and how many cups do you drink a day? Also do you think caffeine is an opiate of the masses or a benevolent drug that is basically a cure-all for what ails you? I vote for the latter.

LOL.

Sometimes I avoid caffeine in general and especially coffee because it's a diaretic and who needs that? I can't see evil industrialists forcing people to drink coffee to stay up late, they'd just need more bathroom breaks! I think the coffee drinking may have become prevalent due to electric lighting keeping us up longer hours anyway.

But, I do enjoy a coffee every now and again. I'm more of a social coffee drinker, the same way people are social smokers. I never smoke so I guess that does make it my drug of choice. I think I avoid both the benefits and negatives of it by doing that though.

My day begins with a two hour meeting with court programmers and developers......so boring! I can't get through the meetings without coffee. I've been dubbed the coffee champ of our office coffee club. And this is my favorite blend, so GOOD!

Larry's Beans. I like the Mighter Mocha Java blend.

yeah, I try not to go over 2 or 3 cups a day. Everything in moderation! My dad also thinks electric lighting is evil for the same reason.

Larry's Beans is a funny name! That link wasn't working for some reason btw. You should try this Starbuck's Via though because for instant coffee it's really shockingly good. The only draw-back is the price because it's way more expensive than buying the beans.

I basically wake up because the sun shines right on my face in the mornings. I don't usually drink coffee with breakfast because I don't like my roommate's coffee (shhh, don't tell [it's weak and that super-vanilla kind] ) But usually I'll get some during the morning break at like 10:15

Ever since having kids, coffee became a definite need.

I hated coffee before.
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Oct 01 '09 at 7:56am
yeah, I'm usually like that too because there are 2 coffee places right next to where I work and I'm too lazy to make it myself. That's why this instant coffee is so cool!
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Oct 01 '09 at 7:58am
mizuchaud - yeah, it's kind of an acquired taste! I hated it right up until college and then suddenly became hooked when I had to pull all-nighters getting projects done.

I've never hated coffee. I have always appreciated it for its generous sugar-hosting capacities. Nowadays I use less sugar though.
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Oct 01 '09 at 8:10am

I don't drink caffeine. period. It has a terrible effect on me, I don't think it's good for you really...it's a drug. And a shit ton of people are addicted to it, but hey..I guess it's the best drug to be addicted to. I just eat a good breakfast to gain energy and drink water. That's about it.

I don't like the smell of coffee, so I just can't bring myself to drink it. But I like energy drinks, which are horrible for you. Makes me consider acquiring the taste for coffee sometimes. I love caffeine.

i love coffee. slowly consuming it with less cream and sugar.
mike bautista
mike bautista on Oct 01 '09 at 2:02pm
I started doing that too, sonmi. I usually take my coffee with a lot of cream and sugar. But I'm lessening the load daily now. I still can't take it black, though.

I love a cup of coffee, but if my morning is free, I usually don't drink any.

Pogo - body chemistry is so different for everyone so I could well imagine that some people would find coffee horrible. In your case it sounds like a life-threatening allergic reaction so yes, you should maybe avoid it!

Sheik - you are one of us. Welcome.

Azarello - your dad is a wise man. :)

Tiffany - I don't trust energy drinks at all, they have all kinds of weird crap you don't need. Coffee is way more natural. It is time grasshopper. Come over and join us. When starting out just make sure to add enough sugar and cream so it'll taste like a dessert, that's the trick. ;)

Julia - I wouldn't totally cut out creme and sugar because I've heard that because coffee is so acidic it's actually healthier to take it with cream. With cream it's much easier on the stomach and also let's face it, just tastes a heck of a lot better. That goes for you too Mike. It's supposed to be a luxury, a treat, not a some form of weird punishment! Sheesh, just let yourself enjoy it!

Ben - haha, that's a really good one and there were some other gems in that link like this one:"Sleep is a symptom of caffeine deprivation. - Unknown"

Those would both make awesome type-tees. Nail-biting ethical question: since the dude who thought of that last one is "unknown" could that dude possibly be me? I mean, what's to stop me from submitting it as a slogan!? dibs.

I'm a black coffee girl..... one first thing in the morning, but limit it to 2-3 a day cozI get bad bouts of insomnia so I try not to aggravate it.

When I am sketching I sometimes drink more, but doesn't seem to keep me up so much when combined with a workbook and ink.

Kim - yeah, I never drink coffee past 5 pm otherwise I'll be up all night for sure. As for taking it black, I know that sounds really cool and grown-up but I say a little cream and sugar brings out the natural, wonderful flavour!

Hi,
I'm a coffee snob, admittedly. Only the Ethiopan $6 a 250 gram dark dark 'Mocha Lima' stuff for me, freshly grinded for me at the posh local coffee house. Drinking it is like a slap in the face, a good one though.

ratkiss on Oct 02 '09 at 5:12am
Hmmm. I like the smell of coffee. I used to drink some in my high school days then just stopped drinking it. I haven't had a taste for it in what seems like forever. I do drink tea often but not everyday and it may or may not contain caffeine (it often contains sugar though, he he)

haven't partaken of milk/cream since i was weaned off my Mum....I flat out refused then and it has stuck....can't stand the taste.

Do however like other dairy.... but I'm not sure a chunk of cheese in my coffee would improve it!
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Oct 02 '09 at 5:18am
Esta - "Drinking it is like a slap in the face"? Haha, that sounds like an abusive relationship. Drinking coffee should be like a warm, comforting hug.

Nichole - actually, I love tea too. The only reason I don't drink more of it is because it doesn't wake me up enough. Wish someone would come out with a super-caffeinated tea.

Oh, and thanks! :)

Kim - yeah, my girlfriend is the same way and I worry about her calcium intake. I think as long as you're getting it from enough other sources it's ok. Actually dark, leafy-green veggies apparently have quite a bit of calcium.
